Discover Castellania
Castellania (in French language, châtellenie or mandement), in the south-east of France was a territory held exploited and protected by a castle; during the Middle Ages it represented the smallest unit of administrative fractionation. This constituency sometimes grouped administrative, military and financial functions. It designated the territory on which the castellan exercised its ordinary rights. In its center was the castle that was the capital of the Castellania, administered by a castellanus (Castellanus). The republic of San Marino still uses this denomination for its internal subdivisions.
