Castles and sacred hills

Castles and sacred hills: stage 3 leads from Villadeati to Villa San Secondo through Murisengo, Montiglio, Cunico, Cortanze, Montechiaro d’Asti. From Villadeati you descend to Murisengo and follow the Superga–Vezzolano–Crea road for a stretch. The path passes through Montiglio, the church of Santi Nazario e Celso and ends at Villa San Secondo.

Description of the route

From Villadeati you exit following via Roma, via Torino and via Case Vallone. The first stretch leads through a wooded environment to the small church of San Sebastiano and then to Murisengo, dominated by its castle. Leaving the village behind, the path joins the Superga–Vezzolano–Crea route for about three kilometers, before descending onto a dirt road on the valley floor parallel to the provincial road.

The stage crosses open countryside, dotted with farmhouses and pastures. After a few kilometers a detour leads to the SP90 and then to a gravel dirt road. The descent passes between a riding school and the Codana artificial lake, then returns to the path. In this sector it is important to follow the updated route, because the official route indicates a deviation from a section affected by a landslide.

The next ascent leads to Montiglio Monferrato, known as the land of sundials. The castle dominates the profile of the village and the square constitutes a natural point for a break. Once out of the centre, you descend again towards the valley floor on a dirt road, crossing the provincial road 80 and reaching the SP22, where the route also passes the railway before returning to the fields.

The last part follows a small, almost straight agricultural road. Along the way you come across the detour to the Romanesque church of Santi Nazario e Celso, one of the most significant visits of the day. After passing the Montechiaro d'Asti cemetery, continue up to the SP53; the turn towards Villa San Secondo finally leads to the town center and to the arrival point in Piazza Madonna delle Grazie.
