G-Stack: at a glance

Since 1952 in Italy, a series of international flights took place in the balloon for the study of elementary particles, which culminated in 1954 with the launch of a large package of nuclear emulsion, the G-Stack (“giant”-stack). The emulsion plates, exposed at altitudes of approximately 30,000 meters, were able to record complete traces of the decay products of K mesons (or kaons), allowing them to be systematically studied, following the emergence of pressing questions within the scientific community. The flight, organized by the universities of Bristol, Milan and Padua, took place on 12 October 1954 from Novi Ligure and produced important results, mainly exhibited during the Pisa conference in June 1955.[1]
