A closer look
Synagogue of Nizza Monferrato: at a glance
The synagogue of Nizza Monferrato, now dismantled, stood in Nizza Monferrato in Piazza del Municipio, in the Palazzo De Benedetti. The De Benedetti Palace was built in the 19th century, while the synagogue, pre-existing, was in Ghetto, today via D'Azeglio.
As typical of ghetto synagogues, the cult building was in no way recognizable from the outside, hidden inside the De Benedetti Palace. After the emancipation of 1848, the rapid demographic decline of the community led to the early twentieth century at the closure of the place of worship, which was dismantled in 1937. The furnishings were transported to the synagogue of Alessandria, where they are still found. The De Benedetti Palace has recently been restored but nothing remains on site in memory of the synagogue.[1]
