Tanaro and the lands of Ruché

Tanaro and lands of Ruché: stage 16 leads from Rocchetta Tanaro to Montemagno through Castello d'Annone, Castagnole Monferrato, Montemagno. The dirt road along the Tanaro reaches Castello d'Annone. After a short stretch of state road, woods and hamlets lead to Castagnole Monferrato; the Ruché vineyards precede the Montemagno castle.

Description of the route

From the Rocchetta Tanaro square you take the direction of the Maccon hamlet. A little further on, a dirt road appears on the right that follows the bank of the Tanaro and leads to the entrance bridge of Castello d'Annone. It is a flat and pleasant start, very different from the climbs of the Apennine stages.

Leaving the town on the right, the path faces a short stretch of state road in the direction of Asti. The official sheet urges maximum caution between kilometers 6 and 6.8: you must proceed in single file and make yourself clearly visible. At Fontanasanta you finally leave the state road for a dirt road immersed in the woods.

The route passes through the hamlets of Campanella, Terre Rosse and Bordoni, then enters a forest strip approximately three and a half kilometers long. Among the trees there are panoramic points of the wooded hills. The arrival at Castagnole Monferrato passes through the chapel of San Rocco and Madonna di Fatima and the social winery, before reaching the town square.

From Castagnole we set off again among the Ruché vineyards. The last part takes place on paths and rural roads, with the profile of Montemagno increasingly evident. The castle dominates the village and leads towards the finish line, closing a balanced stage between the Tanaro river corridor, the woods and the vineyard hills.
