Romanesque churches and Grignolino

Romanesque churches and Grignolino: stage 17 leads from Montemagno to Lu and Cuccaro Monferrato through Viarigi, Vignale Monferrato, Cuccaro, Lu Monferrato. From the castle of Montemagno follow path 507 towards Viarigi. The valley floor leads to Vignale and Cuccaro, among Romanesque churches, truffle grounds and open panoramas, up to Lu Monferrato.

Description of the route

The departure is in front of the parish church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary of Montemagno. Going up towards the castle a beautiful view opens up in the direction of Casorzo; Before leaving the town, the Romanesque church of San Vittore is also worth a visit. A small road below the castle crosses the provincial road and leads onto path 507.

The 507 leads to the Viarigi cemetery and allows you to enter the village. Here the Romanesque church of San Marziano constitutes another important cultural stop. After crossing the centre, a path descends to the valley floor between the hills, crosses the provincial road and starts climbing again towards Vignale Monferrato.

The track passes the village of Vignale, which is worth a short detour, then faces a long stretch of valley floor. The dirt roads cross truffle areas and lead to the foot of Cuccaro. Not far from the route is the small church of the Madonna della Neve, the last significant religious building of the day.

From Cuccaro a panoramic asphalt road offers opposing views: on one side Alessandria, on the other Conzano and Camagna. The path finally reaches Lu Monferrato, Grignolino territory, and ends in the small square of Via Roma. It is a gentler stage due to the difference in altitude, but full of villages, Romanesque architecture and open views.
