Asti→Castagnole delle Lanze

Description of the route

The departure from Piazza del Palio takes you out of the center of Asti via the railway overpass and the bridge over the Tanaro. After the urban stretch you enter the WWF La Bula oasis, where the route passes next to the farms and crosses a poplar grove. An old quarry forces us to change direction; you then follow the motorway and the river banks up to the underpass at Molini d'Asti.

Once you have crossed the provincial road 59, continue on Strada Sottorocche and Strada Rimembranza, passing the SP3 of Valtiglione. The path reaches Repergo and then via Verguino, until it meets the SP64. From here the stage becomes decidedly hilly: a descent opens up a wide view of Costigliole d'Asti and leads to the San Carlo village.

The entrance to Costigliole takes place near the cemetery. You cross the historic center up to the castle, which constitutes the main monumental reference of the day. Once around the building, a bridge leads to the camper area; a sequence of secondary roads reaches Cascina Castlet and the Big Bench Rosso Passum, a panoramic point on the Barbera hills.

The last part alternates short asphalted stretches, vineyards and valley bottoms. The views extend towards Lanze and the Langhe, then a descent between the rows passes near the wineries and leads to the town of Castagnole delle Lanze. Piazza Balbo marks the end of a long, varied stage full of passages between the river environment, rural landscape and historic villages.
