Confluenza del Tanaro
Bassignana · Po–Tanaro · Alessandria
At Bassignana, the Tanaro joins the Po among riverside woods, fields and river channels. The confluence belongs to a changing landscape, best explored by observing water and birds from permitted paths. Begin in the village, without treating the meeting point of the rivers as somewhere that must be reached at all costs.

A confluence within a wider protected area
The current conservation reference is the Confluenza Po–Sesia–Tanaro SAC, code IT1180027: it covers a broad stretch of the Po between Frassineto Po and Isola Sant’Antonio, beyond the Tanaro mouth alone. Bassignana stands on slightly raised ground between the two rivers. Fields and poplar plantations alternate with less altered habitats: wooded banks, gravel bars, islands and oxbows. Water levels change this pattern, so a photograph or an older track does not necessarily describe today’s access.
A corridor for river wildlife
White willows, poplars and patches of alder woodland line the river system; ponds and oxbows retain aquatic plants of conservation interest. Herons are among the most recognisable birds, while gravel bars and eroding banks support species with different requirements. Migration, nesting and wintering make the whole Po corridor important. Binoculars allow observation from a distance: entering an island or approaching a colony adds disturbance rather than improving the visit.
A village shaped by river crossings
Bassignana has long been shaped by the meeting of the rivers. A ferry crossed the Tanaro before a bridge replaced it in 1961, a reminder that the village was a crossing point as well as a riverside settlement. Conservation names have also changed. The historic Riserva della Confluenza del Tanaro belongs to the earlier organisation of Po protected areas; today the Parco naturale del Po piemontese and the Natura 2000 network are distinct conservation references.
Finding your way without shortcuts
Use Bassignana as your village reference and check park and municipal notices before choosing a river access. Maps locate places but do not certify passage along embankments or private land. Stay on permitted routes without descending onto gravel bars or pushing through vegetation to the exact confluence. For the wider area, consider Bosco Musolino in Valenza. Check opening before travelling to Cascina Belvedere in Frascarolo, as access and services may be limited during building work.

Before you visit
Does the map point provide access to the water?
No. These references help you locate the area. Check access, restrictions and bank conditions locally and with the authority; do not cross vegetation, private land or gravel bars to reach a pin.
Does the SAC cover only the Tanaro mouth?
No, it covers a much larger Po corridor and seven municipalities. Bosco Musolino and Cascina Belvedere introduce this wider area; they are not consecutive stops on a walk from Bassignana.
