Natura 2000 site

Valmanera · Zona Speciale di Conservazione

Asti · Castell’Alfero · Chiusano d’Asti · Cossombrato · Villa San Secondo

North of Asti, Valmanera preserves wooded hills and short, shaded streams. The Special Area of Conservation is much larger than the WWF oasis at Villa Paolina, which provides a practical introduction to local habitats through educational paths and guided visits.

The SAC and oasis are different areas

Valmanera is Natura 2000 site IT1170002, spanning five municipalities. The SAC covers 2,190.46 hectares; WWF’s oasis around Villa Paolina occupies about 10 hectares within Asti. Hills generally between 150 and 250 metres are shaped by easily eroded sands, with rounded rises and small valleys cut by streams. Woodland is extensive, while fields and poplar plantations mainly occupy larger valley floors. Visiting the oasis therefore introduces only part of a much wider landscape.

From cool woodland to rockrose slopes

Black locust and chestnut are widespread, but oak and oak-hornbeam woods are particularly valuable habitats. The oasis also includes wet meadows and the Valmanera stream alongside warm, dry slopes. These support sage-leaved rockrose, Cistus salviifolius, an unusual Mediterranean presence this far north. Contrasting habitats favour insects, amphibians and birds. Use the educational path or a guide to learn about botanical rarities rather than seeking independent access to sensitive plant sites.

Villa Paolina and environmental education

Villa Paolina consists of nineteenth-century buildings surrounded by woodland. Estate spaces have been adapted for hospitality and education: the villa also houses a library and Natural History Museum, while the hostel occupies the former stable and hayloft. This transformation traces the estate’s move from agriculture to nature education. A pond, apiary and educational garden connect walks with practical activities, particularly useful for school visits arranged with the operators.

Planning a Villa Paolina visit

The oasis address is Località Valmanera 94, Asti. Guided visits, which can include the villa and museum, require booking; interiors are visited with an escort. Confirm opening even for an independent outdoor walk, as winter, weather or maintenance closures are possible. Ask for a map on arrival and arrange workshops beforehand. Viatosto church can complement the day as a nearby cultural stop, separate from the nature route and without assuming a signposted walking connection.

Before you visit

Does Valmanera mean only Villa Paolina?

No. The SAC spans a large area in five municipalities. The WWF oasis is a small part with its own services and visiting arrangements; booking there does not cover the whole SAC.

Can I arrive without booking?

Independent outdoor visits do not require booking, but confirm the oasis is open. Guided visits, museum and villa require advance arrangements; do not assume daily availability.
