Already documented in public acts of the 12th century, the present church was largely rebuilt during the second half of the 17th century, and expanded at the end of the 19th century with the addition of the tiburium, presbytery and apse. It preserves interesting furnishings and paintings from Baroque times. Of considerable importance, in the right aisle, the canvas of Country by Sebastiano Taricco, the monumental altarpiece of Assunta of 1785 attributed to the monk Carlo Gorzio; the canvas of Immaculate Conception by the painter Giancarlo Aliberti (1670-1727). In the left aisle the baroque stuccoes of the side chapels of the seventeenth century, the canvas of Transit of St. Joseph, by Aliberti, the beautiful Renaissance marble sculptures in the chapel of the baptistery, coming from the funerary mausoleum, later dismembered, of the Marquises Scarampi, lords of the place. The church was a "civic temple" as it was built at the expense of the Municipality: for this reason the emblem of the Dog, which has been the coat of arms and symbol of the City for over half a millennium, still stands out on the high bell tower.
