The Marquisate of Grana Monferrato was a small fief of theAsti.

Constituted in 1164 with the assignment of lands by Emperor Frederick Barbarossa to William "the Old", seventh Marquis of Monferrato.

The feud of Grana passed to the Gonzaga of Mantua in 1559. In 1589, Vincenzo I Gonzaga raised the feud to Marquisate and assigned it to his lover Agnese Argotta, who married the noble Prospero Del Carretto. For over a century he belonged to the Del Carretto family, passing at the beginning of the eighteenth century to Maria Enrichetta Del Carretto (1671-1744), daughter of Ottone Enrico Del Carretto, married to Philip Charles, Duke of Arenberg. In 1755 he passed to the Duke of Aarschot Carlo Maria Raimondo d'Arenberg. The feud of Grana in 1780 was assigned, with the title of Count, to Amedeo Messier.
