The plant entered operation on 25 February 1865, in conjunction with the activation of the trunk Nizza Monferrato-Canelli and was originally managed by Strade Ferrate dello Stato Piedmontese.
Following the statization of the railways, between 1905 and 1906, the line last managed by the Company for the Ferrate Roads of the Mediterranean was incorporated into the state network and the exercise of the plants was assumed by the Railways of the State.
Since 2000 the management of the entire line, and with it that of the station of Canelli, has been in charge to Rete Ferroviaria Italiana which for commercial purposes classifies the plant in category "Bronze"[1].
The station was without traffic from 17 June 2012 to 10 November 2018, due to the suspension of the service on the line, replaced by bus[2].
In February 2018 the municipality designed an agreement with RFI, to obtain in convenient use the management of the building travelers, to be assigned to voluntary associations and thus avoid its degradation[3].
After a few months of work, on 11 November 2018 the station was reinaugurated on the occasion of the reopening of the route Asti-Castagnole Lanze-Nizza Monferrato, with the arrival of two historic trains of the FS Italiane Foundation coming from Turin Porta Nuova with the terminus Canelli for the 'Truffle Fair'[4].
