Discovering Castellero

Castellero (Castille in Piedmont) is an Italian municipality of 282 inhabitants[1] from the province of Asti in the Piemonte.

History of Castellero

SymbolsExplore this chapter

The family of the Solaro in 1312, supported by the Provençals of Ugo del Balzo, siniscalco by Roberto d'Angiò, occupy the castle of Agliano Terme and, according to De Canis, they defeat the De Castello in Castellero, where they destroy the fortress, held by the Ghibellini Pulsavino. From these events it is evident that the castle of Castellero represented, during medieval civil struggles, an anti-guelpha stronghold.

Castle of Castellero

Interior of Castellero Castle

On the ruins of the small castle involved in the bloody events of 1312 a fortress was rebuilt that from the previous demolished construction took the name of Castellero, or “castellaro”, term sometimes used to indicate a destroyed castle. Nevertheless, the reconstruction was so accurate that the castle is full of charm and historical, artistic and architectural interest.

Few, but safe traces of this period have still remained in the structures of the current castle: the moat, almost disappeared, the windows with pronounced strombatura, a high and spacious environment at the level of the outer spur and the base of the tower, which makes to think of the guard body; at the wide turn all sixth are placed the hooks shaped again to which the lamps were hung.

The present building denounces the transformations and additions successively over the centuries: the interventions of the seventeenth and eighteenth century, attributed largely to the Bridge family have realized an elegant country house that, as the only memory of a bellicose past, preserves the tower. Romboidal shape, 30 meters high, in the past the tower ended with roof to spioventi tiles, but at the beginning of the twentieth century the danger of a collapse advised to eliminate the roof and the tower was crowned with 10 rectangular merlons.
In 1961, on the occasion of further repairs, they were transformed and took shape as a "tail of swallow".
