Discovering Castelletto Monferrato
Castelletto Monferrato (already Castelletto Scazzoso, from Castrum Scatioso[4], Castlèt Monfrà in Piedmont) is an Italian municipality of 1 443 inhabitants[1] from the province of Alessandria, in Piemonte.
Landscape and area
It is located about 10 kilometers north of the provincial capital.Explore this chapter
It is located about 10 kilometers north of the Alessandria.
Located about 3 km from the exit Alessandria Ovest della A26 (Ge Voltri – Gravellona Toce), Castelletto Monferrato is located on a 200 m promontory on the sea level that under optimal conditions of visibility allows the eye to range from the plain of Bosco Marengo to the Apennines, from Monviso to the group of Monte Rosa.
The area hills are mainly covered by vineyards because the limestone soil with blue and yellow clay sediments and thousands of fossil shells residual from the Adriatic Sea that millions of years ago became part of these lands, lends itself very well to the production of grapes.
History of Castelletto Monferrato
SymbolsExplore this chapter
It was originally owned by the medieval family. marquises of Monferrato; in the 13th century it was disputed by Alessandria and in the territory there were clashes between the militias of the Marchesato and those Alexandrians. It was later devastated by the Spanish army in the 16th century. He later became a fief of the Tickets of the San Salvatore Monferrato, and then passed under the dominion of the Savoy. Castelletto became a municipality towards the first half of the eighteenth century, a period in which the parish church of San Siro was also built, located at the top of the town near the ancient castle. In the same years, between the end of the eighteenth century and the beginning of the nineteenth century, the development of the main hamlet of the town, Giardinetto, began, until then an area forming part of the gardens and lands of the Beltondino estate, on which some stables and granaries were initially built.
In 1859, a historic meeting took place between King Vittorio Emanuele II and Garibaldi during the Second War of Independence.
It is the birthplace of Lodovico Rastelli (1801–1878), a violin maker, whose primary activity was aimed at repairing arched instruments and plettro; it built violins, violets, cellos, smugglers and guitars.

In 1937, the current name of the country was established.[5][6][7]
Symbols
The coat of arms of Castelletto Monferrato is a talking weapon: a two-ball tower alludes to the “small castle” of the name, behind which stand the Piedmontese Alps, recall to the mountain range of the "Monferrato" (Mons Ferratus).[8]
The banner is a blue cloth.

Traditions and events
The Businà
Castelletto Monferrato is famous, in the surroundings, for Bus. It is, in the words of P. Raiteri, about:
(Piero Raiteri)
After being suspended in the post-war period, the tradition of Bus It was recovered in the 1980s, and it still lasts today. It is played every year, on the day of Carnival.
Sagra della Zucca
Patronal festival that takes place on the last weekend of August. Possibility to taste various typical dishes of Piedmont and in particular the Lasagna di Zucca, product De.Co. of the Municipality of Castelletto Monferrato.
The Canton Games
In recent years, Castelletto Monferrato organizes those who are called "Giochi dei cantoni": towards the end of summer, a team representative of the country challenges in various disciplines other teams, representatives of fractions and suburbs. Usually the teams participating are:
- Castelletto Monferrato
- Giardinetto
- Valverde
- Gerlotti (who, however, has recently retired from the competition).
The formula is not fixed, but changes every year in an attempt to make the competition more balanced. Typically you challenge football and volleyball, but also cards, with forty scale tournaments and crumbs, as well as in the "games in square", which are also very changing, and count, for example, on a path to obstacles to be covered with a full tank of water or in the cut timed of a trunk.
At the end of the games, usually distributed over two weekends, the scores earned by the teams are added, and the winning one gets the right to guard the "Coppa dei Cantoni" until the following year, when it will be relocated. The cup will finally be held definitively by the first team that will win the games three times.
