On the north-western side of the town there is a small hill where you can see the remains of an ancient castle, probably destroyed during the invasions around 1400-1500.[4]

The ruins of the castle of Marchesi Del Carretto are now preserved in a green area where a panoramic point was obtained to admire the village and valley below. On 10 April 2023, the giant bench number 283 of the circuit of the municipal administration was officially inaugurated at the panoramic point. Large benches designed by Chris Bangle.

History of Sessame

SymbolsExplore this chapter

The settlement of Sessame is very ancient, probably pre-existent to Roman conquest and traceable to the presence of Ligurian populations.

It is said that the village was founded around the "mill" years, but it is not certain the name. Many historians say that the name Sessame comes from Latin sex ("sei", cardinal numeral adjective) to indicate the six Roman miles that separated it from Acqui Terme or the six water courses that still bathe the municipal territory today and, finally, for the sixty miles that marked the distance from the village to Turin.[4]

Symbols

The coat of arms and gonfalone of the municipality of Sessame were granted by decree of the President of the Republic of 19 May 1954.[5]

"From silver, to the blue hull, raised, accompanied by a red castle, crenellated and open of the field, and at the tip of a green mountain. Exterior ornaments from Commune.[6]»

The banner is a blue cloth.[7]

Religious architecture

Church of San Giorgio Martire

The parish church is dedicated to the patron Saint George. The building, of Baroque age, has undergone many renovations over time (last reconstruction in 1959). In addition to the main altar, it shows the statue of the saint in the act of killing the dragon.[8]

Façade of the Church of San Giorgio Martire

Every year on April 23, the feast of the patron saint is celebrated and therefore on this occasion in addition to the holy Mass for all the faithful there is a solemn procession planned.

Brotherhood of the Annunciation

Located next to the parish, the now-disturbed Oratory of the Confraternity of the Annunciation is commonly called the church of the Baptists. Its construction dates back to 1600 and of this period preserves the apse, the facade and the beautiful bell tower. Unconsecrated and communal property, it has been completely renovated and used as cultural activities.[8]

Church of San Rocco

Located in San Rocco, overlooking the Val Bormida. The festival overlooks a panoramic area. Renovated in 2004, the church is very well preserved.[8]

Church of San Sebastiano

Located in San Sebastiano, near the provincial road to Rocchetta Palafea, dominates the area to which it is dedicated. Very well renovated with numerous votive offerings inside as evidence of great popular devotion, the church welcomes, today as in the past, pilgrims and wayfarers with its small triple-arched portico. At the back of the building there is an equipped rest area.[8]

Other places

Garzaia of Val Bormida

In the common part located in the bottom of the valley there is a place for gauze due to the presence of the heron ashes.[4] It is a ground flap overlooking the left bank on the Bormida of Millesimo and that protects one of the largest gauzes in northern Italy. The gauze is not open to the public. However, it is possible to observe herons at a distance with the help of a binocular.

Ruderi Castle of the Marchesi Del Carretto

The castle stood at the top of a hill located north-west of the concentric. It had to be an imposing construction, but today only ruins remain within a green area well recovered from the municipality and used as a panoramic area.

Torrotto (Turot in Piedmont)

Simple two-storey construction in the shape of a small tower, Torrotto stands on the top of a conical hill, well visible from each location. For a long time, it has become the symbol of the village. In private land, he once belonged to Mr Giuseppe Saracco, a politician of great moral levy, native to Bistagno, President of the Council of Ministers in the early 1900s.

Giant bench (number 283, locality Castello)

The blue giant bench of Sessame (number 283) is installed in the green area located in the locality Castle, at a panoramic point.

Giant bench (number 295)

Just outside the town's concentric, another bench was installed in a panoramic position, yellow-red.

Agriculture [ 4 ]

Since always, the main crop in the territory of the municipality is the vine which is also one of the main riches of the area, purely agricultural.

Since the early years of the twentieth century and until the 1940s it was known the cultivation of mulberry, whose leaves were indispensable for the breeding of silkworm. Around the village you can see wooded areas where chestnuts and mushrooms can be harvested.

The cultivation of the vine produces delicious wines such as Dolcetto d'Asti, Barbera d'Asti and Moscato d'Asti and, above all Brachetto d'Acqui, a real specialty of the municipality, as it was recognized by official sources that assert that this grape was historically made in Sessame and therefore exported to neighboring countries.
