About the trail
Around Sala Monferrato, the landscape of vineyards houses small churches and votive shrines. The loop follows these presences between valley bottoms and ridges, and then re-enters the village from its highest point, next to the church of San Francesco.
What to look out for
From Fornasone you descend towards Rio Longoria, then going up to Cascina Bonelli and San Gregorio. Among the vineyards you reach San Grato, built in the seventeenth century as a votive offering after a plague. Cascina Crosia preserves an aedicule dedicated to the same saint; further on the chapel of San Cristoforo appears. Beyond Cascina Colonia, meadows and rows of poplars and oaks precede the climb into the woods to San Francesco. The return passes through the centre, with the castle and San Giacomo.
