Gavi and the Lower Ovada area
Gavi and the Lower Ovadese: stage 12 leads from Gavi to Carpeneto through Nebbioli, San Cristoforo, Crebini, Castelletto d'Orba, Silvano d'Orba. From Gavi you go up towards Nebbioli and San Cristoforo, with a seasonal ford on Albedosa. Crebini, Castelletto and Silvano d'Orba precede vineyards, valley bottoms and woods that lead to Carpeneto.
Description of the route
From Piazza Dante, the heart of city life in Gavi, we proceed towards the swimming pools and the Nebbioli hamlet, dominated by the Sanctuary of Nostra Signora della Guardia. As you gain altitude, it is best to turn around: the village and the large Fort of Gavi appear in their full extent before the route enters the woods.
The path reaches San Cristoforo and goes around the town halfway up the hill. Once you have found the asphalt again, follow the Albedosa municipal road towards Tramontana for a stretch, then return to the woods until you reach the ford on the Albedosa stream. The passage is especially indicated in dry periods; when the water level is higher, the alternative follows the provincial road with little traffic between San Cristoforo and Crebini.
From Crebini the provincial road leads to Castelletto d'Orba and its medieval village. Once past the center, take a secondary road towards Gallaretta, arriving behind Silvano d'Orba. The path then crosses the bridge over the Orba and the one over the motorway, progressively taking on a more rural character.
After a stretch on the SP191, a detour through the vineyards passes Cascina Tollu and the Rio Maggiore. The valley floor initially runs alongside the rows and then enters the woods. The final ascent reaches the foot of Carpeneto and leads to Piazza del Castello, the end of a long but very varied stage in terms of landscapes and types of terrain.
