Malvasia di Schierano, a grape to discover

The name of the Malvasia di Schierano leads to the north of Astisan, towards Passerano Marmorito and Castelnuovo Don Bosco. Here the journey meets a dark and aromatic grape, linked to a local tradition of sweet wines. It's another door to the entrance Monferrato Astigiano, to be explored at the scale of countries.

The hills of Schierano and Castelnuovo

The cultivation of Malvasia di Schierano is linked to an area close to the border between Astigiano and Torinese. Schierano, Castelnuovo and Pino d'Asti are references to his territorial narrative. The name of the vine therefore invites us to know a circumscribed landscape, with its own agricultural tradition.

The pages of the Passerano Marmorito, Pino d'Asti and Albugnano help connect the supports. Crossing these places before tasting makes the origin of wine more legible: a hill and a country replace the abstract distance of the name on the label.

A Malvasia with a precise identity

The Malvasia di Schierano is a black berry variety, with purple grapes and rather scattered bunches of small size. The aromatic component characterizes its use in sweet wines. The full name is essential to recognize it within the group of grapes called Malvasia.

The Malvasia di Casorzo is another variety and leads to other countries. The comparison opens two aromatic itineraries in Monferrato. Follow the full names allows you to appreciate the bond of each grape with places, keeping visible the different identities of plants.

The passage to the Malvasia of Castelnuovo Don Bosco

The Malvasia di Castelnuovo Don Bosco DOC can employ Malvasia di Schierano and Black Malvasia long, even together, with the possibility of a quota Freisa. The name then tells a wine and an area; its name includes a larger production than that of one variety.

Continue to Castelnuovo Don Bosco, then go back to the story of Astigian hills. In the cellar, ask which grapes have been used allows to connect wine to the plant. The Freisa offers another stage to deepen this passage.

Slave, Passerano and the memory of fortifications

Schierano gives Malvasia a reference that can be found in the visit of Passerano Marmorito. The municipal territory collects centers with different stories and architectures: moving between these places allows to know a geography more articulated than that suggested by a single name. In Schierano, the square stone tower of the ancient castle today serves as a bell tower of the church of San Grato. The artifact preserves a trace of the fortification and inserts it into the life of the country. The stop thus adds a concrete point to the journey of grapes, before continuing among the cultivated slopes.

A Passerano Marmorito, the castle dominates the town with a transformed and expanded structure over the centuries. In Primeglio, the link between the castle and church of San Lorenzo tells another organization of the spaces; in Marmorito remains fragments of ancient fortified structures. These presences allow us to observe how history is distributed among several nuclei, with the agricultural landscape connecting them. The wine enters this plot of countries, buildings and streets: the knowledge of the territory enriches the tasting through places and events that have a proper time.

The Malvasia of Castelnuovo Don Bosco report the path to the designation. From ♪, continue towards Pino d'Asti and Albugnano, where the view opens the view of woods, vineyards and inhabited. The Nebbiolo and the Freisa offer other keys to know the crops of the northern hills. Follow the Malvasia di Schierano gives the trip a precise aromatic accent: the full name of the variety keeps the plant close, while countries allow to deepen history and denominations guide return to wine.
