From place to vine

Nebbiolo, a grape to discover

Nebbiolo immediately recalls great names of Piedmontese wine. In the journey of MonferratoTrails we meet him from an astigian perspective: the hills of Albugnano and the Alfieri Lands open a path to follow through countries and denominations. The Monferrato Astigiano thus becomes a door to another geography of the vine.

An Asian path in the geography of Nebbiolo

Albugnano DOC and Terre Alfieri DOCG offer two references to know Nebbiolo in this part of the Piemonte. Names bring attention to specific areas and make visible a presence that expands the story beyond the most famous Langhe areas.

The journey can start from Albugnano, continue towards Pino d'Asti and Castelnuovo Don Bosco, then open a second route towards Cisterna d'Asti and San Martino Alfieri. The pages of the villages help to build the stops and recognize the places before tasting.

The long time of the season in vineyard

Nebbiolo is a black berry vine, with early sprout and late ripening. This seasonal arc is an important part of its agricultural behaviour. The grapes are small and the skin is consistent; within the variety there is a diversity of forms that the ampelographic work describes carefully.

In the visit to the vineyard, follow the story from the vegetative restart to the harvest allows you to understand why time is central. The position of the rows and choices made in the season become concrete arguments to know the plant and work that accompanies the ripening of grapes.

Structure, refinement and origin

Nebbiolo is associated with structured wines and interpretations found in aging an important part of its expression. The tannins invite to follow how the sip changes with time. To read a bottle, the origin and path chosen by the manufacturer complete the name of the vine.

In the Alfieri Lands the journey also meets theArneis, white grapes linked to the same denomination in a distinct type. Explore both allows you to cross the hills with two reading keys. Back to the story ofAstigiano to connect these places to the other stages of wine.

Albugnano and the Terre Alfieri, two landscapes to know

In Albugnano the Nebbiolo meets a position that invites you to widen your gaze. The village is located between the Rio Nevissano and the Rio Meisina; the viewpoint offers a wide reading of vineyards, forests and inhabited areas. From above, the countryside shows its own joint: the crops follow the slopes, the centers recognize themselves on the heights and the roads connect them through different quotas. The landscape becomes a first topic of the visit, with which to arrive in the company having already observed the position of the vineyards and the alternation of the environments.

The story of Albugnano binds to Vezzolano, in depth on the municipal page. This presence adds to the discovery of wine the religious and artistic dimension of places. Continuing towards Pino d'Asti and Castelnuovo Don Bosco, the journey maintains a continuity of countries and hills, but opens up other stories. The wine Albugnano then allows to return to the denomination and to deepen how Nebbiolo enters a defined productive framework. The plant and the territory become two threads to be followed together during the tasting.

In the Alfieri Lands, geography changes. San Martino Alfieri takes care of the watershed between Tanaro and Bourbon; the long ridge organizes the center, with the castle and the ancient nucleus in distinct positions. Vicoli and squares offer a stop before finding the cultivated slopes. A Cisterna d'Asti, forests and vineyards surround a village dominated by the castle and parish. These two countries give rise to name Terre Alfieri a concrete context. Follow the Nebbiolo between the north and west of Astigiano allows you to know more landscapes, maintaining a common question on the origin of grapes.
