Albugnano DOC, a wine to discover
Albugnano leads to a small area of Monferrato near the province of Turin. Here the Nebbiolo finds a place other than that of its most famous Piedmontese names. The name invites you to know four municipalities and to observe how a large vine can take on a local identity through the collection scale of countries and hills.
Four municipalities, a geography collected
The area includes Albugnano, Pine Asti, Castelnuovo don Bosco and Passerano Marmorito. The four names immediately form the journey. It is a north-western part of the Astigiano, where the visit can be built for stops in towns and connections through the countryside, gradually recognizing the position of individual stages.
Albugnano offers a starting point to look at the territory from above and place the countries in the reliefs. The passage to Pino d’Asti and Passerano Marmorito then allows the landscape to approach the scale of houses and rows. The route alternates wide views and details, showing how a small name can understand many different situations, from a dorsal cultivated to a crop village.
A Nebbiolo to know in its place
Nebbiolo’s notoriety may be an invitation to leave, but Albugnano is appreciated by its origin. The local dimension of production encourages a direct encounter with the vineyard and with those who work it. The name of the country on the label puts this link in the center and allows to remember a bottle through the places crossed during the visit.
Historical testimonies and buildings in the municipalities add depth to the route. A day can alternate the observation of the countryside to that of architecture, following the relationship between settlements and reliefs. The wine becomes a thread inside a wider visit, which includes the life of the villages and the continuity of the crops. It is a useful perspective to know this margin of Monferrato without stopping at just one panorama.
The vine and the time of aging
The Nebbiolo represents at least 85% of the ampelographic base described by the consortium; Freisa, Barbera and Bonarda can complete the wine within the limit indicated. The name also includes a pink version and a superior type. The path of the latter gives space to the aging, offering another opportunity to observe the relationship between the vine and the time spent in the cellar.
The aromatic profile described for reds can recall raspberry, small fruits and floral or spicy nuances. The evolution expands this picture and makes the comparison between wines of different age interesting. In the sip, it seeks the relationship between perfume and structure: the taste becomes clearer when a bottle accompanies the meal and is recovered several times, allowing to recognize the transformations in the glass.
An itinerary between villages and goblets
A table with stuffed pasta, meat dishes and cheeses offers different possibilities to get to know the red Albugnano. The choice can follow the character of the bottle: a younger expression enhances the fruit, a wine matured longer invites to explore aromas and texture with more tasty preparations. Lunch gives a relaxed pace to a day spent among the four municipalities.
You can continue with the Freisa d’Asti, following another grape present in the wine culture of Astigiano. The link helps to see how varied the northern part of the Monferrato Astigiano. The journey changes perspective: after the Nebbiolo of a collection area, the story of a vine spread in a wider territory opens.
Finish by returning to one of the panoramic points met at the beginning. Recognising the views of the countries already visited gives coherence to the day and connects the name Albugnano to a personal geography, made of stages, roads and landscapes remembered.
