Freisa d’Asti DOC, a wine to discover
La Freisa d’Asti preserves an ancient voice of Piemonte wine. Its character puts together delicate scents and a recognizable consistency, offering an experience different from that of Barbera. To meet her, the journey can move in Monferrato Astigiano, with particular attention to the northern hills, recalled by the consortium in the story of the historical diffusion of the vine.
The hills north of Asti
The name covers much of the province of Asti and allows different routes. Starting from Asti helps to recognize the relationship between the city and the country of the countryside. Continuing north, Montiglio Monferrato and Cocconato They introduce a landscape in which the journey alternates historical centers, dorsal and cultivated traits.
You can give the day a rhythm of short stops and observations. Walk in the village, then look for a point from which to recognize the surrounding reliefs. The route becomes more interesting when the village remains connected to the countryside: the streets, the houses outside the nucleus and the rows tell how the town fits into the territory. The Freisa offers a thread to hold this exploration together.
A tradition with multiple expressions
The consortium binds the Freisa to a history of many centuries and remembers its presence in Monferrato Astigiano. The variety has accompanied different uses, including sweet expressions of the peasant tradition. This plurality is part of his story: the relationship with wine changes according to the time of the table and according to the type of interpretation chosen.
Today the name Freisa d’Asti allows you to explore wines with different paths of maturation. Aging in wood and the Upper typology gives room to a more relaxed reading of the vine. During a visit, ask how Freisa interprets it helps to relate local memory and contemporary work. History takes shape through concrete decisions, from the grapes collected to the way of accompanying evolution in the cellar.
From the scent to the tannins
The Freisa is the only grape indicated in the consortium tab for this denomination. Its profile can recall pink and raspberry, while the dry taste has a tannic component that refinement contributes to integrating. It is an interesting encounter: the nose opens with delicacy and the sip adds texture, inviting to follow wine beyond the first impression.
Compare a young bottle with a matured expression longer. The fruit, tannins weaving and aromatic development can tell two different moments of the same variety. Returning to the glass during the meal allows you to observe how the perception changes: a dish enhances the fruit, another makes the structure more evident. Tasting becomes a progressive reading, in which wine finds space and continuity.
Cold cuts, cheeses and a second stage
Soft or semi-driving cold cuts and cheeses are meetings indicated by the consortium. A table dedicated to these flavors offers a simple context to know the Freisa and follow its dialogue with food. You can combine different preparations, letting the glass accompany the passage from a delicate flavor to a more intense one. Lunch extends the journey to the newly crossed countries.
To expand the comparison, discover the Grignolino d’Asti and theAlbugnano. The first opens another reading of the Asian reds, the second leads to a small area where Nebbiolo plays a central role. From Cocconato, the journey can continue towards other hills, keeping the attention to the variety of grapes and to the scale of countries.
The return to Asti closes well a day started in the city and spent on the reliefs. Retrieving the urban center after the villages helps to read the province as a set of relationships, in which wine preserves a concrete place.
