Castello di Ottiglio

The territory of Ottiglio was between the places confirmed by Federico I al Marquisate of Monferrato in 1164, to then be infeuded to the family of Tiglio and, from 1440, to the Valperga, then, in the following centuries, to reach several other families, including the Montiglio and the Guazzi di Olivola.^[1]

The castle is located in the upper part of the village and near the church of San Germano and, during its history, it was unscathed by the wars that broke into Monferrato during the 17th century. During the centuries various building interventions, particularly radical in the second half of the eighteenth century,^[2] They brought the fortified complex to become progressively a residential structure.^[1]

Currently the building, built in bricks and tuff, is a large villa, characterized by an austere aspect that almost seems to overstate the adjacent church of San Germano and loom on the steep passage of access supported by a high wall in brick and tuff.^[3][2]

The building also shows courtyards with squared stone cones, divided into bays marked by lesen and a tile-shaped band,^[1] while the interiors are compromised by the subsequent interventions and there is no known decorations once present, as the building is a private residence and it is not visitable.^[3]
