The territory of Pietra Marazzi, in which testimonies dating back to Roman times were found, in the 10th century belonged to the bishops of Pavia and later became part of the Marchesato del Monferrato, later being granted as a fiefdom to the Sacchi family[1] while the village of Pavone, located on a height at the left bank of the Tanaro presents itself with its own historical building nucleus developed around the site of the castle.[2]

Drawing of the castle of Pavone d'Alessandria by Alessandro Greppi dating from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.

The current castle is located in the place where several fortified structures followed over the centuries, the oldest attested was a sighting tower dating back to the Lombard era around which, over the centuries, a medieval fortress developed that in the various passages of ownership - with the last owners, the Faà di Bruno who lived it until the 1930s of the twentieth century[3] - and wars it was subjected to modifications and additions several times until its definitive transformation into a noble residence. Its current appearance is due to a reconstruction carried out between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.[1]

Residual parts of the ancient fortifications are the brick gate - bound by the Superintendence from 14 November 1934 -[3] and the Ghibelline crenellation of the outer wall curtain.[1]
