From the region to the glass
Malvasia di Casorzo DOC, a wine to discover
Malvasia di Casorzo DOC brings in the glass an aromatic voice of the hills between Astigiano and Casalese. The wine is born from a grape that preserves the name of the country and opens a path between sweetness, scents and different forms of processing.
The journey begins to Casorzo, then widens towards Grazzano Badoglio and Vignale Monferrato. They are close places, but each offers a different entrance in the territory: the village, the landscape, the countryside and the encounter with those who cultivate Malvasia. Wine invites us to recognize this network of relationships along the ridge.
Between Casorzo and the hills
The area is of interest to the Astigian and Alexandrian territories. In addition to Casorzo and Grazzano Badoglio, the disciplinary connects wine to the hills of Vignale, Altavilla, Ottiglio and Olivola. The name of the main village remains the reference of the label, while production is part of a landscape of nearby municipalities and communicating slopes.
From one center to another, the vineyards accompany the profile of the houses without occupying the countryside alone. The page of Monferrato Casalese introduces the relationship between villages, stone and wine conservation; Monferrato Astigiano offers the other horizon of this path. Crossing the provincial border becomes a natural way to read the name.
The delimitation includes in whole or in part also Grana Monferrato. Following the area among these seven municipalities means observing how much wine can unite countries of different provinces. A tour built around two or three stages leaves time to enter the centers and then return to the countryside: the distances collected favor this alternation of points of view, from the village seen on the hill to the landscape observed by its streets.
A vine with the name of the village
The DOC has been recognized in 1968. The nominal bond with Casorzo immediately recognizable a local production in the largest heritage of Malvasia. This name includes different varieties: to understand the wine you need to get to the specification Malvasia di Casorzo, with his identity and his area.
The continuity between vine, village and bottle gives depth to the visit. In the cellar you can ask where the vineyards are located and what place this grape occupies in the history of the company. The story gains precision when it returns to a hill just observed: aromatic wine stops being only one category and becomes the fruit of a concrete campaign.
Sweetness and forms of wine
The ampelographic base provides at least the 90% of Malvasia di Casorzo. The remaining quota may include the grapes authorized by the disciplinary, including Freisa, Grignolino and Barbera. There are red and pinkish, sparkling and passive versions: reading the type on the label helps to understand how the aromatic heritage of grapes has been interpreted.
The comparison between a young version and a passito highlights the role of concentration and processing. The sweet component is oriented towards pastry, fruit and tasting moments. The Malvasia of Castelnuovo Don Bosco offers another aromatic stage of Monferrato, obtained from a base of different varieties: the two names tell distinct territories.
A day from Casorzo to Vignale
Dedicate the first stop at the village of Casorzo and its countryside, then reach Grazzano Badoglio. The route can continue towards Vignale, where the panorama invites you to move between the dorsal ones. A visit to the company allows you to follow the passage from vineyards to wine, bringing in relation what you have observed with the choices explained during tasting.
To expand the tour, Ottiglio and Olivola keep the journey in the size of small villages. Municipal insights and site paths help you choose a walk. Finally, at Malvasia, Grignolino of the Monferrato Casalese: the change of vine and style brings out the richness of these hills in a raised space.
