Discovering Casal Cermelli

Casal Cermelli (Casal Sirmé or House in Piedmont) is an Italian municipality of 1 184 inhabitants[1] from the province of Alessandria, in Piemonte, located in the Alessandria plain to the left of the Orba stream. Located along the SP185 which connects the cities of Alessandria And Ovada, Casal Cermelli is one of the main municipalities of Alessandria, a geographical region of the Lower Piemonte which takes its name from the capital Alessandria. The municipality was founded by the Cermelli family in the Middle Ages by subtracting a fraction from the municipality of Castellazzo Bormida.

History of Casal Cermelli

In 1929 Portanova was a suburb of Alessandria, indi passed a fraction of Casal Cermelli. He had parish church with several rural chapels and the Elementary School.
The new Parish was built between 1888 and 1891. It is dedicated to St. Anthony of Padua and houses a painting of Holy Family of the workshop of the Maraglione (1595), from the old church. A plaque recalls Fr. Pietro Sommo and the other Benefactors who contributed to the construction.

Testimony of the economic liveliness of this small territory is the constitution in 1899 of Operaia di Mutuo Soccorso di Portanova and in 1910 of Social Latteria founded to create a dairy industry that exploited the extension of artificial and natural meadows favored by rational fertilization and to combat the crisis of cereals and wine which had occurred. The Social Latteria was supported by the teachings of Professor Voglino of the Ambulatory Chair of Agriculture of Alessandria and from the modern conception of the agricultural management of Pallavidino, especially Giovanni Pallavidino who of the Society was the founder and president.

Casal Cermelli is known above all for the historical collection of gold from the sands of the Orba stream, for which we have written testimonies since 1212. At the end of the 19th century, the "Switzerland Society of Aurifers", then transformed into "Dutch Society", which in 1887 implanted a dragon for the industrial exploitation of aurifere sands, which about a year later was overwhelmed by one of the usual floods of the stream.
Currently the tradition lives in Cascina Merlanetta, where didactics were implanted of washing of aurifere sands and is previewed the establishment of a Museum of Research. A few hundred meters, along the banks of the Orba, in the area of Natural Park and SIC (Site of Community Importance) a specific area has been reserved for amateur gold picking, the only one existing in the world.[4]

Portanova

The hamlet of Portanova is of particular importance in the territory because it was one of the lands that participated in the foundation of the city Alessandria, built in the years around 1168 to prevent a possible new barbarian invasion following that of Frederick Barbarossa. Since it was the last of ten doors or places which participated in the consortium of builders was called "Porta-Nova" and this denomination replaced the previous ones of Silva Urbæ and of Rondinella.
The origin of Portanova dates back to the 10th century. The "Torre di Portanova" is not that the rest of the castle built by Dal Pozzo in the 16th century when they extended their manor of Retorto, also incorporating this territory and establishing you summer residence. In the walls of the "Torre" are well visible sections of masonry performed with building technique of the barbaric era.
The Orba stream, which lapses the territory, was always a cause of concern for erosion and floods, but this proximity favoured the reduction to agricultural crop very fertile than what originally was nothing but a forest wild rich only of game.
