Discovering Castelspina

Castelspina (Castiè d'la Speina in Piedmont) is an Italian municipality of 388 inhabitants[1] from the province of Alessandria, in Piemonte.

History of Castelspina

SymbolsExplore this chapter

Born from the municipality of Castellazzo Bormida around 1300, the parish church dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary was founded on the foundations of the ancient church of Santa Maria di Gamondio.

During the Kingdom of Italy it was part, since 1859, of the mandate of Sezzè (later renamed Sezzadio) and of the district of Alessandria, until the abolition of the mandamental and surrounding bodies in 1927.

In 1884, mother Chiara Ricci (of Savonese origin) founded with the help of Father Innocenzo Gamalero the order of the Franciscan Sisters Angeline.

In 1918 Cardinal Giovanni Canestri was born in Castelspina (1918-2015), bishop of Tortona from 1971 to 1975, Archbishop of the diocese of Rome from 1975 to 1984, Archbishop of Cagliari from 1984 to 1987 and Archbishop of Genoa from 1987 to 1995.[4]

The commune, in the context of fascist fusions, was suppressed in 1929 and its territory was aggregated to the municipality of Sezzadio. Castelspina will regain its autonomy in 1954[5].

The coat of arms of the municipality of Castelspina was granted by the decree of the President of the Republic of 13 January 2003.

The current block that gives on the town square including the Town Hall building was built on the foundations and walls of the large quadrangular castle built around 1240 by the Malvicini family and of which there are still considerable parts of the perimeter walls.

Other buildings of architectural interest are the oratory and parish church of Assumption, built in 1628.
