History of Gavazzana
SymbolsExplore this chapter
The first certain news about the village dates back to 1242.
In 1655 the ancient church of Santa Maria di Castiglione, which was then existing on the western slope of the hill and is a subject of great popular veneration, is depreated by the penniques of the Duke of Modena Francesco d'Este.
Gavazzana was a possession of bishops of Tortona until 1784, the year in which, with all the Vescovato, it passed to the domains of Savoy. On 18 June 1799, he suffered the plundering of the transalpine army of General Moreau, at the end of which three victims were counted on the road. In May 1859, during the Second War of Independence, French troops were attested waiting to measure themselves with Austrians: the fight will take place shortly after, in Montebello.
In 1929 Gavazzana became a fraction of Cassano Spinola; returned autonomous commune in 1948[4]. On 1 January 2018, despite the contrary opinion expressed by the people of Gavazzano in the 2016 referendum, the merger process was concluded in the municipality of Cassano Spinola.
Symbols
Gavazzana's coat of arms had been granted with the D.P.R. of 12 October 1993.[5]
