Guazzora (La Guasura in the dialect of the city) is an Italian municipality of 282 inhabitants[1] of the Tortonese in the province of Alessandria, in Piemonte.

History of Guazzora

The parish of Santa Maria Assunta, consecrated in 1753[4]

The name of Guazzora comes from sluggish, guazzatoria or from the cheeks that, obligatoryly, they had to cross to move on foot, or with boats, from Tortonese to the Lomellina, to the Vogherese, to the Pavese separated by the Tanaro and Scrivia rivers which flow here into the Po. The actual town was built in the 13th century and was administratively dependent on the municipality and principality of Pavia, despite its proximity to Tortona. Until 1100, the Voghera noble lordship of the Corti reigned there, to whom Matteo Visconti assigned, in 1314, the castle of Montemerso, the control of the passages over the Po and the custody of the ports. At the end of the 15th century Michele dei Nobili di Guazzatoria established a new transit towards the island of Garda. In 1507 the Corti nobles were still living in the area, while a century later, in 1644, they were transferred to Pavia. In 1700 it was enfeoffed to the Biglia nobles.[5]

Historically and culturally linked to the Pavese since its beginnings, in 1748 Guazzora passed to the Piemonte and was integrated in the province of Voghera from which it was separated administratively with the edited royal of 10 November 1818 to be united to Circumdarium of Tortona in the commission of Sale.
