Discovering Ponti

Ponti (Púit in Piedmont) is an Italian municipality of 492 inhabitants[1] of the Monferrato alessandrino, which rises on the banks of the Bormida river, located in Province of Alessandria, in Piemonte.

History of Ponti

SymbolsExplore this chapter

The origins of Ponti's commune are to be found in the pre-Roman era: historical sources date its foundation at the same time with the nearby Acqui Terme (Aquae Statiellae).
During Roman domination the village was given the name of Pontum, from the bridges that the Romans built on the Bormida River during the construction of the Via Emilia Scauri. Still today, in memory of this important Roman communication route, you can see an Antonina column (a road sign from the Roman era) in the portico of the civic palace of the municipality. In even more remote times the area that is now Ponti was inhabited by the Ligurian Stazielli who are the founders of today's Acqui Terme.

Symbols

"From gold, to five bands of red, crossed by the silver belt, loaded with three wheels of five rays of the second. Exterior ornaments from the Municipality.»

The municipal coat of arms resumes the symbols of the Del Carretto family and was granted by royal decree of 25 June 1931.[4] The gonfalone is a red drape, granted with RD of 19 October 1933.[4]

The pontoon festival

The pontoon festival is the most important feast of the country and takes place every year on the second last Sunday of carnival.

The founder of the pontoon dates back to the second half of the sixteenth century, the Marquis Cristoforo del Carretto known for its courtesy and charity. For these reasons, a group of Chaldeans from Dipignano, a village in the Cosentino, arrived in 1571 at Ponti, and before the Marquis asked him for asylum and food. In return, they offered the noble their skill and skill in preparing for victories. It was so that the Marquis gave them a huge pair promising them to fill it with flour if they were able to repair it. The noble Cristoforo del Carretto kept the word in the company, giving them a large amount of polenta flour. Today's polentars are part of the Italian Master Polentari. The tradition of polenta is also the reason for the twinning of Pontese with Dipignano.
