The name of the country could come from Rocha Uverani, cited in an ancient document, connected to the Ovrano stream which flows nearby. However, a diploma from Emperor Otto I which granted dominion of the place to Aleramo, reports the wording Ruspavera. Be that as it may, the town developed as a place of military importance at the time of Bonifacio del Vasto and increased its prestige in the following centuries.
In 1209 Otto Del Carretto ceded to the Municipality of Asti the domain on Roccaverano and the surrounding territories, as reads at the cap. 39 Codex Astensis where, by the way, is drawn in a miniature the image of the castle. Due to complex political and commercial agreements, Roccaverano passed various hands to reach the powerful Scarampi family of Asti in 1337.
During the succession war of Monferrato, the castle was strenuously defended by the French occupants and finally expelled, in 1615, by the Spaniards commanded by Don Luigi di Cordova.
In 1633 the entire country was plundered by the Napoleonic militias directed in Alsace.
In 1673 the domain passed to Charles Emmanuel II of Savoy, but in the following century it suffered two other military occupations: the French in 1715 and the Spanish in 1744. All these events led to the loss of the castle, which today remain fragments of the walls and the mighty cylindrical tower.[4]

Among the fractions is Garbaoli, known for the "robiole", that is, the typical goats of the place and of high gastronomic value. Over time, the population of the center has declined considerably and now (2008) only a few houses (many empty) and few inhabitants remain. Since 1973 at the canonical house of Garbaoli Parish, dedicated to St. Martian, the Catholic Action of the Diocese of Acqui organizes in summer self-managed school fields that over three decades of experience involved tens of thousands of attendance.
