History of Sarezzano

In the municipal territory several finds have been found that testify to settlements of Roman times.
The place was chosen as a hermitage by the monks Ruffino and Venanzio, who were buried here. Their remains, originally preserved in the parish church of San Michele, were then translated into the small church of the castle.
The village in the Middle Ages belonged to the lordship of bishops of Tortona and was then tied to the Guelph party.
From the fifteenth century to the end of the eighteenth century it was then fiefdom of the Guidobono Cavalchini after that, with all Tortonese, passed to the Kingdom of Sardinia. In 1855 the former castle church (which had been seriously damaged by lightning in 1610 and then rebuilt) was elevated to the status of parish church. It was then replaced in the 1950s by a newly built building, at the foot of the hill where the castle stood, dedicated to saints Ruffino and Venanzio.[4]
In 1585 it was found in the church of the village, next to the remains of Saints Ruffino and Venanzio, Codex Purpureus, an early medieval codex of fine workmanship consisting of 72 sheets with the text of the four gospels. Written in the 5th or 6th century on reddish parchment, it is contained in a wooden case; after being lost again it was found in 1872.[4]
Symbols
The coat of arms of the city resumes the coat of arms of the Sarezzano family who were lords of the place.
