Discovering Terzo

Terzo (Ters in Piedmont) is an Italian municipality of 813 inhabitants[1] from the province of Alessandria in the Piemonte, located on the left bank of the Bormida river.

From the top of the tower (up to 25 meters high and built between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries) you can enjoy the landscape that opens onto the valleys of the rivers Erro and Bormida.

Of this structure - inserted in the system of "Open Castles" of Basso Piemonte - only the late-medioeval tower remains. It was fortification of the bishops of Acqui Terme.

The name of Terzo derives from Latin To tertium lapidem ("at three milestones"), since it was located at the distance of three Roman miles (about 3 km), from the city of Aquae Statiellae (Acqui Terme) on the Via Aemilia Scauri which linked the latter to Dertona (Tortona) and to Gaul.

In some texts it still appears as Terzo d'Acqui. This toponym is actually erroneous, in fact it refers to the period in which, with a royal decree of 20 December 1928, the king of Italy Vittorio Emanuele III aggregated the municipality of Terzo to that of Acqui Terme. The municipality of Terzo, renamed in that period Terzo d'Acqui, became to all intents and purposes a fraction of the spa town. Subsequently, with the Decree of the Provisional Head of State, published on 11 November 1947, and which came into force the following day, Terzo was reconstituted as a Municipality and, with the title, regained its original name.

Symbols

"From gold, to the green countryside loaded in band by a silver road and a milestone of the same, with number three in Roman characters, everything is surmounted right by a pastoral blue, palo, and left by a tower of green, closed, walled black, crenellated to the guelfa of three. Exterior ornaments from the Municipality.»

(Presidential Decree of 3 June 1982[4][5])

The pastoral recalls the dominion of the bishop of Acqui; the milestone with the Roman figure III recalls the probable origin of the name of the village; the 14th century tower, today only rest of the castle that dominated the valley of Bormida and Erro.[4][6]

The gonfalone is a truncated drape of blue and yellow.
