History of Tonengo
SymbolsExplore this chapter
Tonengo can boast ancient origins: according to some scholars it may have been founded by the Cimbri. It is located on the ancient Roman road that combined Asti to Industry.
In 770 it was a country of some importance, that the Emperor Charlemagne gave in fief to Aimone Radicati, Count of Cocconato. Later Tonengo became part of the orbit of Marquisate of Monferrato, and in 1292 there is news of a bloody war clash at the hands of the Astesi, who were besieging Albugnano, and that at Tonengo they defeated the troops of the marquis of Monferrato.
In the 16th and 17th centuries he belonged to the lords of Gattinara and Settimo. With the Treaty of Cherasco of 1691, Tonengo joined the Duchy of Savoy.
In 1928 it was aggregated to the Municipality of Cocconato and only after the last world war it became autonomous commune again.[5]
