About the trail
From Mombaruzzo’s fortified centre to Rio Secco, this walk combines medieval traces, a woodland church and walls exposing ancient sediments.
What to look out for
Via XX Settembre passes Santa Maria Maddalena and the old well. From Pozzo del Rio Secco, the route climbs towards Chiesetta del Presepio before entering chestnut and oak woodland. In the Rio Secco gully, also called Sabbione, the walls expose Sabbie Astiane and Argilla di Lugagnano formations. The return follows via Sottomura beside the village’s former defences.

Start and practical details
Start outside Mombaruzzo town hall in piazza Marconi. The Rio Secco section follows the sandy bottom of a gully: avoid it during high water or after heavy rain.
