History of Cavatore

The medieval tower

The name of Cavatore appears on 20 April 996 in a diploma in which Emperor Otto III of Saxony granted the village, along with other inhabited centers of the Ligurian Apennines, in possession of Primo, bishop of Acqui.[4] During the bishopric domain, between 1100 and 1200 a sighting tower was built, two walls in defense of the town and a castle. The diocese of Acqui then ceded the village, with an agreement of 29 June 1383 which also included other fiefs, to the family of Malaspina. Between the 14th and 15th centuries a third city wall was built.[5]
