It's part of the Bass Monferrato and is situated on the southern side of a hill 300 meters high, on which dominates the scenic castle of the Cattaneo Adorno Giustiniani. At its feet stands the ancient parish church of San Pietro, of medieval times, later restored, with beautiful frescoes inside, which preserves the Romanesque bell tower. There are numerous fractions of the municipal territory.
The Capoluogo is divided into a lower part, around the parish, and in a high part (Rollino), where the typical urban planning of medieval "ricetti" is recognizable, with ancient houses and the Church of San Defendente. From the square in front of the Palazzo Comunale you can enjoy a beautiful view over the hills of Basso Monferrato and on the plains crossed by the Po River.
Notable fraction is Cantavenna, which extends in a semicircle on a hill at 350 meters above sea level, with splendid views of the Vercelli plain and the Alpine range: on good days you can see Monviso, Mont Blanc, the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa.
The resort is dominated by the neoclassical Archpriest Church of San Carpoforo.
On the opposite side is Varengo, once an independent municipality, whose beautiful and ancient houses are perched around the notable parish church of Sant'Eusebio, high on a spectacular staircase. The church is a notable example of Baroque architecture, a work attributed to Magnocavallo or his school.
Nearby are the hamlets of Sessana and Casaletto, the latter with the romantic Chapel dedicated to the Madonna della Neve.
Important are also the localities of Zoalengo and of Mincengo, on two hilly prominences separated by an idyllic valley, where the ancient Parish Church of Sant'Aurelio stands.
The most recent development is fraction Piagera, in the alluvial plain at the mouth of the Rio Marca into the Po, where an important weekly agri-food market is held.

Both are obtained with Barbera grapes, which add a small percentage of Freisa and/or Grignolino: the Gabiano, which is also produced in the nearby municipality of Moncestino [11] and the Ruby of Cantavenna[12] , also produced in the territory of the neighboring municipality of Camino. The production of strawberries is also of high quality, as well as that of corn, cereals, green beans and vegetables.
