You walk in the Monferrato: the pleasure of starting again, one stage at a time

In the evening you arrive in a town that in the morning was just the name at the end of the stage. You put down your backpack, think back to the climb and recognize in your legs the distance travelled. The next day you set off from there: the last houses become the start of another day and the journey continues without stopping. The paths in the Monferrato offer this way of knowing the hills, made of continuity, stops and landscapes that connect through the experience.

You can dedicate a few days to the walk or prepare a longer trip. The pleasure is in finding a sequence that suits your pace, with enough time to pass through the villages and experience the arrivals. Each stage brings a new perspective; together, the days build a memory of the territory that remains broader than a single excursion.

Why choose a walking trip

Walking for several days changes the relationship with distances. The villages stop being separate destinations and become points of a story: the one where you had breakfast, the one you reached after the forest, the one that appeared on the other side of the valley. At the end of the day you can find on the map a succession of places that you now know through precise images and sensations.

Even the stops acquire a different value. Stopping for lunch or visiting the town of arrival is as much a part of the journey as the time on the trail. A balanced program leaves energy for these moments and makes the restart the next morning pleasant. The right pace emerges from preparation and the ability to listen to how you are doing, day after day.

The Grande Cammino del Monferrato

The section dedicated to the Great Camino presents an itinerary of 382 kilometers organized in 18 stages, with an overall ring that refers to Casale Monferrato. On the site the project also appears as Monferrato Grand Trail and proposes crossing the provinces of Alessandria and Asti.

This dimension allows you to get to know different environments: the hills of Casalese, the landscapes of Asti and the reliefs of Acquese. Countryside, woods and inhabited centers alternate along the journey, with dirt sections and asphalt connections. The variety invites you to compare the individual days, because distance and commitment change significantly from one stage to another.

Open the overview of the Great Camino and ideally follow the succession of departures and arrivals. It's a good way to understand which part of the territory you want to cross and which days connect to the trip you have in mind.

Three stages, three characters of the landscape

Casale Monferrato to Cereseto: Leave the City for the Hills

The first stage starts from Piazza Castello at Casale Monferrato. The urban stretch gradually gives way to the countryside and the path enters a landscape of farmhouses, vineyards and ridges. San Giorgio Monferrato and his castle remain a visual reference in the first part of the release.

The card indicates 19.91 kilometres, 731 meters of positive altitude difference and approximately five hours of walking. It is already a day to prepare carefully: the arrival at Cereseto requires a solution for overnight stay, continuation or return. Discover the stage Casale Monferrato–Cereseto.

From Villadeati to Villa San Secondo: between woods and open countryside

The third stage takes you from Villadeati towards Murisengo and continues between dirt roads, farmhouses and valley bottom landscapes. The succession of environments gives the path a varied rhythm, with passages in which the territory gathers and others in which it opens up again.

19.1 kilometres, 454 meters of climbing and an approximate four and a half hours are reported. The description indicates a deviation connected to a section affected by a landslide: to prepare for the day it is essential to consult the update of the source and use the relevant track. From Ponti to Ciglione: a more challenging day in the Acquese area

The stage from Ponti to Ciglione shows a more marked face of the route. The initial climb gains altitude towards the Old Church and the ridge; the landscape opens onto the Erro valley and continues through descents and new ascents.

With 19.67 kilometers and 1,086 meters of elevation gain, the six hours indicated describe a challenging day. The route includes a ford: water conditions and practicability must be checked before tackling it. The presence of a hostel as an arrival point does not equate to confirmed availability. Read the stage Ponti–Ciglione and organize the overnight stay directly.

Choose a few stops and make your own journey

For a first walk, identify a continuous stretch compatible with the days available. Also consider the journey to reach the departure: the first day you may have less time to walk, while the last must leave room for the return.

Compare consecutive stages and their climb distribution. Two days of the same length can require very different energy, especially with a backpack. Evaluate the accommodations before definitively fixing the program, because the location of the overnight stay can add distance compared to the indicated arrival.

If you only travel part of the loop, organize the connection between the end point and the start point. Concretely check any transports and their times. Already knowing how to return allows you to experience the last stage as a conclusion of the journey, with time for one last stop.

Backpack, orientation and small habits along the way

Bring what you need for the scheduled days and try to walk with your luggage before departure. The weight is felt especially on repeated climbs and on consecutive days. Prepare water, appropriate clothing, protection from the sun or rain and everything necessary to use navigation during the trip.

Download updated tracks and make maps and descriptions available offline. Consult the source on the state of the signs: the path page recalls the need not to rely exclusively on trail signs. Accommodation, food outlets and water supplies require independent verification, without assuming that each country offers the same services.

During the walk, distribute breaks and maintain a pace that allows you to observe. Arriving before the day is over leaves time to get to know the country and calmly prepare for the next stop.

Choose the season of your journey

In spring the days get longer and the new greens accompany the transition between the countryside and the woods. In autumn, vineyards and vegetation change color and a panoramic stop can become the moment in which to freeze the memory of the day. In both periods, check the conditions of the surface after the rain and consider the time needed to tackle any muddy sections.

In summer, prepare departures in relation to heat, exposure and verified water supplies. Starting early can also leave you more time to get to know your destination. In the months with less light, plan the stages based on the hours available and the forecast: fog and wet ground can change the pace. The chosen season becomes part of the experience, along with the ability to adapt the program to real conditions.

Also give space to the places of arrival

The journey continues when you take off your backpack. A walk through the streets of the village, a dinner based on local cuisine or a booked visit can give depth to the place reached. If you want to include a tasting, consider the time, distance from the accommodation and commitment of the stage just completed.

To choose an activity during a break day or at the end of the walk, consult the experiences in Monferrato. A well-placed rendezvous can become one of the memories of the trip, without forcing you to speed down the trail.

Frequently asked questions about paths in Monferrato

Do I have to cover all 18 stages?

You can organize a section of the trip. Choose consecutive stages and check access to the departure, overnight stays and return from the point where you will finish.

How do I estimate the time needed?

Start from the data of the individual stages and consider your pace with luggage, breaks and any connections to accommodation. The average number of kilometers of the entire walk does not describe the commitment of each day.

Are accommodations included in the itinerary?

No. The cards describe the itinerary; overnight stays, meals and transfers must be checked and organized separately.

Can I get to know the same territories by always sleeping in the same place?

Yes, by preparing independent excursions and related transfers. It is a different formula from the itinerant path, useful when you want to maintain a base for the entire stay.
