Weekend in Monferrato: two days of walks, villages and small pleasures

Arrive, put down your bag and head out to see the hills up close. A weekend in Monferrato can begin with a walk and take shape through what you encounter: a square in which to stop, a road through the vineyards, a visit that adds a story to the landscape.

Two days allow you to alternate movement and rest, choosing an area to get to know calmly. You can walk on Saturday and cycle on Sunday, dedicate both days to the paths or leave part of your stay for a tasting and the discovery of the villages. The common thread is the time you want to give to the places, in addition to the time needed to reach them.

Choose a base that is part of the trip

Where you stay affects the pace of the weekend. A base close to the routes you are interested in allows you to leave calmly and return without long transfers. You can choose a country you want to experience or identify the main excursion first and then look for accommodation in the area.

The Casalese offers ideas for walking among wine villages and landscapes; the Asti area allows you to combine centers like Moncalvo with itineraries in the countryside; the Acquese opens the search towards Visone and the hills around Acqui Terme. They are different directions, each sufficient to give character to a living room.

Explore the municipalities of Monferrato and compare the location of the departures with the base you are considering. Check the availability of the accommodation and the necessary travel separately, including the real arrival time on the first day.

A weekend in the Casale area, between walking and wine culture

The first day: enter the landscape on foot

If you have a sufficiently large day, you can delve deeper into the stage from Vignale to Moleto. The 12.6 kilometers and 396 meters of climb connect countryside and villages, with passages at Olivola and Ottiglio before arriving in Moleto. Starting from Piazza Mezzadra allows you to begin your journey in the town, before descending towards the rural roads.

Along the route the perspectives change: Vignale appears again on the hills, the old Fons Salera and Mongetto introduce other references, then the passage beyond the Rotaldo leads to the ascent towards Olivola. Churches and towns give a recognizable rhythm to the day; in Moleto, San Michele accompanies the arrival. You can let these small milestones punctuate the pauses, taking the time to observe what you've just gone through.

It is a proposal that gives the weekend a start made of perspectives and small goals. Leave time for stops and prepare for the return, because the route ends in a different location from the departure. If you arrive later or want to walk less, choose another exit compatible with the remaining hours, without compressing this stage into an insufficient afternoon.

Consult Vignale–Moleto and build the rest of the day around the actual commitment of the journey. The three hours indicated are a reference to be extended for stops and visits; the surface alternates asphalt and dirt and includes stretches on provincial roads.

The second day: knowing what you saw

A visit dedicated to wine can add people and stories to the landscape crossed. From Vicara, to Rosignano Monferrato, the proposal includes vineyards, a panoramic point with Big Bench, the historical archive of the winery and a tasting of four wines. It is an opportunity to delve deeper into the relationship between the hills, the work of the company and the stories preserved in its documents.

At Ponzano Monferrato, Alemat instead offers a visit to the cellar and the historic infernot, followed by the tasting of four wines. The second day can thus continue the theme of the first: after walking through villages and crops, you enter a place that allows you to learn about another aspect of wine culture.

Choose one of the proposals based on the location of your base and availability. Dedicate the rest of the day to a compatible village or walk, considering the transfer and return. The locations of the experiences do not automatically coincide with the arrival of the previous day's trek.

A weekend in the Asti area, from the village to the countryside

Moncalvo can give a point of reference to a stay in which walking alternates with visits. The Truffle Trail starts from Piazza Carlo Alberto and follows an 8.5 kilometer ring, with approximately 250 meters of positive difference in altitude. The countryside, the farmhouses and the small churches accompany the return to the town.

Before leaving the centre, you can stop at the Belvedere Bonaventura and observe the façade of the former synagogue under the arcades. The path then passes through Piazza Garibaldi and Via Cissello, while the panoramic avenue opens up the view towards Crea. Further on, San Pietro, known as La Pieve, Cascina Orsolina and San Rocco mark the stretch between fields and vineyards. Returning to Moncalvo after having explored its surroundings gives continuity to the visit of the village.

You can dedicate a day to walking around Moncalvo and discovering the centre. The three hours indicated for the route allow you to imagine a program to be completed with stops and visits, as long as your pace and conditions are compatible.

For the next day, you can look for another proposal in the same area or choose an exit to the Rocchetta Tanaro natural park. The route sheet shows 6 kilometers and 200 meters of climb: look further into the map and the information on the area to evaluate it compared to your pace. The transfer from Moncalvo must be considered in the program, comparing the departure with the location of the accommodation and the return route.

A weekend in the Acquese area, between cities and hills

Acqui Terme can become the reference for alternating the discovery of the city and an outing in the surroundings. The Sentiero della Torre a Visone introduces a walking itinerary that goes up towards Monte Menno and continues through woods and small towns. 11.29 kilometers are indicated, with narrow passages and a ford in the Tassere river circuit to be evaluated according to the conditions.

The medieval tower and the ancient wash house introduce the path, then the path climbs towards the ridge. From Monte Menno, at an altitude of 405 metres, the panorama allows you to recognize places such as Cavatore, Grognardo, Ponzone and Acqui Terme. The passage towards Santa Croce and the circuit between Olive and Foresti instead bring attention to the woods and villages. It's a day to dedicate to the route, leaving room for orientation and stops.

Learn more about the Visone route for a day of walking, considering approximately three indicative hours and additional time for breaks. For those who prefer cycling, the Acquese also offers rings such as Acqui and the Brachetto lands, 33 kilometres, to be chosen based on vehicle and preparation.

A day on foot and a day on a bike can offer different perspectives on the area. If you want a more intimate pace, you can leave the second part of your stay to the streets of Acqui and a booked experience nearby. The possibilities must be combined depending on the energy and time you want to dedicate to each.

Experiences to choose before, free time to leave after

A visit to the cellar, a guided excursion or a cooking activity can become the moment around which to organize the weekend. Booking the main appointment allows you to know the duration and meeting point and then choose a compatible walk.

Seasonal experiences require attention to the period and the program actually available. In the Experiences section you can search for proposals related to wine, cuisine, truffles, culture, cycling and excursions. Check the location: the results of the external service may also include other areas of Piedmont.

Leave some moments without appointments. A stop in the village or an evening walk can happen on the spot, when the program still has some breathing room. It is often these intervals that allow us to get to know a place beyond the time needed to travel through it.

A weekend to share, at everyone's pace

If you go as a couple, with friends or with children, choose the route thinking about the time everyone wants to spend outdoors. A walk with breaks to observe and photograph can occupy an important part of the day even when the kilometers seem few. Agree on the main activity and leave a margin to stop in places that intrigue the group.

For a stay with a stroller, check the specific accessibility of the route: the Moncalvo Truffle Trail, for example, is not suitable and access to the viewpoint includes stairs. Reading this information before leaving allows you to choose a proposal consistent with everyone's needs. How to adapt the weekend to the season

In spring and autumn you can give space to walks and changes in the landscape. After the rains, check the surface of the paths and dirt roads. In summer, organize the most exposed activities during the cool hours and consider water, shade and breaks.

In months with short days, choose excursions proportionate to the hours of daylight and reserve compatible visits for the remaining time. A program with activities of the right duration is easier to adapt when conditions require changing the order of the days.

Frequently asked questions for a weekend in Monferrato

Are two days enough to get to know the area?

They allow you to explore an area well, alternating a route, a village and an experience. Choose a consistent base of activities instead of trying to hit all areas of the Monferrato.

Is it better to walk or cycle?

It depends on the type of experience you want and your preparation. You can keep a single theme for both days or alternate the activities, checking distances, terrain and necessary services.

Do I have to book experiences?

Check the conditions of each proposal. Winery visits, guided activities and tastings may require a reservation and have limited availability on certain dates.

Are the guide programs bookable packages?

No. They are ideas for composing the living room. Accommodation, transport and activities are verified and organized by the respective operators.

Start with a place you want to know and an activity that makes you want to go. Two days may be enough to recognize a profile of hills, remember the name of a village and discover a road you will want to return to. Find your weekend routes and choose an experience to enjoy during your stay.
