Itineraries in the Monferrato: villages, paths and roads to experience while traveling
An itinerary often begins with a name that arouses curiosity. You read it on the map, imagine the town and look for the road to reach it. In Monferrato that name can become the beginning of a walk, a bike ride or a journey that continues from hill to hill, with time to stop and learn about the places you pass through.
The itineraries in Monferrato can be chosen following a territory or an interest: the villages of Casalese, the countryside around Moncalvo, the Acquese woods, the wine landscape. You can dedicate a day to a route or connect multiple stages. Start from what you want to discover and build the program around your way of travelling.

A territory to know, a theme to follow
If you've already chosen where to stay, see what you can explore nearby. A trail near your base can take you to see the country from a different perspective, while a bike tour connects multiple locations. The proximity leaves time for stops and makes it easier to return to the places that have impressed you.
You can also start from a theme. Walking for several days gives continuity to the encounter with the landscape; following the wine routes allows you to combine cycling with knowing the producers; choosing a ring leaves the possibility of finding the same base in the evening. In the Great itineraries section you will find proposals to compare before deciding on individual days.
Three areas to explore at your own pace
The Casalese area, among villages and landscapes of the infernot
The stage Vignale–Moleto is a starting point to get to know the Casalese area on foot. Its 12.6 kilometers and 396 meters of climb combine villages, valley bottoms and cultivated ridges, with passages at Olivola and Ottiglio. The villages move away and reappear on the profile of the hills, accompanying the progression of the journey.
The departure is from Piazza Mezzadra in Vignale and the arrival in Moleto, where the route meets the church of San Michele. The indicative three hours must be extended for breaks and visits. The surface alternates asphalt and dirt road, with stretches on provincial roads; organize the return from the final location before making other appointments. A visit to a cellar or an infernot can find space in another part of the living room.
Moncalvo and the Asti countryside
If you want to start from a village and find it again at the end of the day, the Moncalvo Truffle Path offers an 8.5 kilometer ring, with approximately 250 meters of ascent and approximately three hours. Piazza Carlo Alberto, the Belvedere Bonaventura and the streets of the center introduce the passage towards vineyards, farmhouses and small churches.
The return allows you to continue visiting the town after getting to know the surroundings. You can take a break at a point observed on the way out or stop in the central streets before returning. Consider asphalt, dirt road and provincial crossings when choosing the exit. The route is not suitable for strollers and the visit to the viewpoint includes stairs.
The Acquese, from the Visone tower to the woods
The Visone Tower Path leads from the ancient village towards Monte Menno and the Tassere river circuit. The medieval tower introduces the path, then the ridge opens up views of the Acquese hills. The passage between woods and villages offers a different interpretation of the territory compared to the routes centered on the vineyards.
The card indicates 11.29 kilometers and approximately three hours, to be evaluated considering narrow tracks, vegetation and the presence of a ford. The return also retraces the initial approach. You can use Visone as a reference for a day of hiking and dedicate another moment to discovering Acqui Terme, checking the movements compared to your base.
The Great Path of Monferrato: giving continuity to the journey on foot
When you want to start again every morning from a different place, a journey in stages offers a structure to explore. The Great Path of the Monferrato is divided into 18 stages; in the catalogue, the Monferrato Grand Trail reports a total length of 382 kilometres. It is a dimension that invites you to choose a part of the journey or to prepare a longer stay.
The pleasure of the journey also arises from continuity: a town reached in the evening becomes the point from which to depart the following day. Hills observed in the distance may enter the horizon of the following day. The landscape is known through the succession of steps, stops and arrivals.
Consult the 18 stages of the Great Path and compare the days you would like to connect. Distances and climbs change from one stage to another: evaluate each section with respect to training, luggage and accessible accommodation. To cover only part of it, prepare connections with the starting and ending points.
The Wine and Flavor Route: cycling following a landscape
Grignolino, Ruché, Aromatici and Dolcetto are the four groups into which the Wine and Flavor Route is divided. The 24 stages allow you to choose a wine territory and give a theme to the ride, moving from the idea of the journey to the study of the individual routes.
The names of the wines become references to observe what you go through. You can watch how the crops follow the slopes, stop in a town and learn more about the work of the companies with an organized visit. The road offers the connection between these moments, while a well-chosen stop allows you to pay attention to what intrigues you.
Explore the Wine and Flavor Route and identify a stage or sequence suitable for the days available. Read the surface, difference in altitude, departure and arrival before choosing the bike. Visits and tastings have their own programs: book them separately when requested and consider travel and return times.
Strade di Coppi and Strade di Aleramo: choose the duration of the trip
The Strade di Coppi offers three rings to be evaluated individually. This formula can be interesting when you want to dedicate a day to a circuit and return to where you started from. Open the description of each ring and compare the commitment with the time you want to leave at the stops. Discover the Strade di Coppi to learn more about the proposals.
The Roads of Aleramo present alternatives in three and six days. They are a possibility to explore when you want to organize a traveling stay, with days that connect and arrivals to prepare. Accommodations, baggage handling and return come into the choice along with distances. Consult the Streets of Aleramo and study the formula that corresponds to your pace.
A gravel journey from the Po plains to the hills
The Monferrato Gravel Traverse offers a Valenza ring of 310 kilometers and 3,550 meters of climbing. The track crosses different environments between Alessandria and Asti, from the alluvial plains of the Po to the vineyards, passing through meadows, pastures and woods. Over 250 kilometers extend along sheep tracks, dirt roads and grassy stretches.
It is an itinerary to be prepared as a journey, choosing the days according to autonomy and the possibility of overnight stay. It involves short sections of walking and requires dry terrain. Open the Monferrato Gravel Traverse to know the route and imagine where to stop: distributing the effort well allows you to also dedicate time to the places encountered along the way.
From the map to the stay program
Use the municipalities directory to search for the routes associated with the area you are interested in. Then observe the departure on the map and the relationship with the town centre: a location mentioned may be near the route and require a detour to be visited. This check helps you choose a comfortable base and give realistic times to your day.
For a stage trip, check how to get to your accommodation from arrival and how to resume walking or cycling the following day. Prepare tracks available for offline use and check source updates. Transfers, breaks and visits add time to the journey: considering them beforehand allows you to experience the journey with greater freedom.
The experiences that give a face to the itinerary
A journey can raise questions that a visit helps to deepen. After passing through the vineyard landscape, you can learn about the work of a winery; after a walk through villages, enter a place that tells its story. Choose a proposal in the living room area and reserve a specific moment for it.
At Rosignano Monferrato, the Vicara experience combines vineyards, Big Bench, historical archive and tasting of four wines. At Ponzano Monferrato, Alemat offers a visit to the cellar and the historic infernot, followed by the tasting of four wines. These are appointments to be organized according to availability, considering the travel distances from the route and the return after the visit.
If you wish to walk accompanied, the proposal of approximately 11 kilometers to Castelletto Molina leads between hills and installations of colorful boats in the vineyards. See the Experiences section to compare programs, venues and required level. A guide or a meeting with a producer can add to the landscape the stories of the people who know him.
Two days to start getting to know an area
A weekend can be the first chapter of a longer exploration. You can choose a route for the first day and dedicate the second to another outing or a visit to the same area. Maintaining a fixed base allows you time to find the streets of the town again and observe more calmly what you have encountered.
The weekend guide in Monferrato offers ideas for connecting these activities. Choose an area, an itinerary you want to take and an experience that intrigues you: the program can grow from here, following the time you want to give to each place.
Frequently asked questions about itineraries in Monferrato
How do I choose between a ring and a stage route?

Can I only walk some stages of the Great Walk?
You can organize a section of the journey by choosing consecutive stages and checking how to reach the ends. Study each day and confirm accommodations before finalizing the program.
Are visits to the cellar included in the wine itineraries?
The stages describe paths to explore. Visits, tastings and other services have their own conditions, to be checked with the operators and booked separately when requested.
Can I search for an itinerary starting from the municipality where I am staying?
Yes. The municipality pages connect the routes associated with the location. Then open the map to check departure, passages and distance from your base.
Choose a name on the map and start imagining the way to get there. The journey takes shape when you leave time for a town, a stop and the curiosity to see what you will encounter after the next hill. Explore the Monferrato itineraries and prepare your departure.
