Excursions in the Monferrato: a day among paths, panoramas and villages

A free day, a pair of suitable shoes and a place you want to get to know better. An excursion in Monferrato can begin like this, choosing a road that crosses the vineyards or a path that leads out of the village. Time is filled with simple things: the pace that finds its own rhythm, a stop to look at the view, the pleasure of reaching a village seen from afar on foot.

Between Casalese, Astigiano and Acquese you will find proposals with different characters. Some leave room for visiting the historic center, others invite you to stay longer among the woods and hills. The best choice arises from the meeting between what intrigues you and the time you can dedicate to it, including the journey and a peaceful return.

What day do you want to live?

Imagine the moment you would like to remember. It could be the arrival in a square after a climb, a lunch at the end of the walk or a stretch of greenery walked with few thoughts. This desire helps give direction to the choice, even before comparing distances.

If you only have the morning, consider an itinerary close to your departure and compatible with breaks. With a full day you can dedicate more time to the trail or leave part of the program to discover a country. For a shared outing, choose based on the walking habits of the whole group: being able to proceed together makes every stop more pleasant.

The times indicated in the cards are references for the route. Add time to arrive, get ready, photograph and stop. A realistic margin allows you to accommodate what makes the day interesting, without having to leave again as soon as you reach a nice panoramic point.

During the walk, try to also choose a stop to enjoy without a specific activity. You can look at the hills from a town square, recognize the point from which you started or follow with your eyes the road you will cross later. If you bring a camera, let the light and details tell you when to stop. Upon your return, in addition to the distance travelled, you will remember how you spent those hours and the places you paid attention to.

Moncalvo: walk and rediscover the village

The Truffle Trail is a proposal to explore when you want to combine countryside and village life. The ring starts from Piazza Carlo Alberto and leads out of Moncalvo between vineyards, farmhouses and small churches. On the way back, the streets of the center become a place to stop again, instead of just marking the end of the excursion.

You can spend some time at the Belvedere Bonaventura before starting or leave it until the end, when you have already crossed part of the landscape observed from above. The route meets San Pietro, known as La Pieve, and continues in the countryside before climbing back towards the town.

The card shows 8.5 kilometers, 250 meters of positive altitude difference and about three hours. There are asphalt, dirt roads and provincial road crossings; the route is not suitable for strollers. Discover the Truffle Path excursion and evaluate how much time to leave for the visit of Moncalvo.

Vignale–Moleto: a day that connects different places

If you like walking towards a new destination, the stage from Vignale to Moleto offers a succession of villages and rural landscapes. You cross the valley floor and ridges, with passages at Olivola and Ottiglio, until arriving at Moleto and the Romanesque church of San Michele.

The route invites you to observe how the villages are arranged on the hills. During the march, those left behind can reappear on the horizon, creating a visible relationship between the road traveled and the one yet to be faced. It's a good reason to stop and look in the opposite direction as well.

There are 12.6 kilometers and 396 meters of climb, with approximately three hours to be extended for stops. The surface alternates asphalt and dirt and includes stretches on provincial roads. Since departure and arrival are different, prepare your return before leaving. Explore the Vignale–Moleto stage.

Visone: change environment along the trail

The medieval tower of Visone marks the beginning of an excursion that goes up from the village towards Monte Menno. The landscape changes between vegetation, ridge and small towns, offering a different day from a route built mainly around villages.

You can dedicate stops to open spots and recognition of the surrounding hills. In the Tassere river circuit, the path once again approaches the details of the terrain and the woods. This alternation makes the exit interesting and requires attention to the narrowest passages.

The indicated distance is 11.29 kilometres, with approximately three hours of walking. There is a ford in the circuit and some sections may be invaded by vegetation. Learn more about the Sentiero della Torre and consult the updated conditions to understand if it corresponds to the day you want to organize.

Easy excursions: find a commitment that makes you feel good

A pleasant walk does not require you to reach the limit of your energy. To choose a limited outing, read together the distance, difference in altitude, surface and difficulty. A concentrated climb or wet terrain can significantly change the time needed, even on a relatively short route.

The guide to easy walks collects walking proposals classified as easy with a known distance within 15 kilometres. Important differences remain within the selection: for a peaceful exit, it is best to choose the route that is most consistent with your pace, not the one that comes closest to the limit of the collection.

With children or people who are not used to walking, also consider crossings, possibilities for breaks and characteristics of the return. For accessibility needs or use of the stroller, specific information is needed, to be verified on the individual itinerary.

A stop that gives continuity to the day

At the end of the excursion you can stop in the village, choose a lunch or look for an experience in the same area. After crossing the vineyards, a visit to the cellar allows you to learn about the work that contributes to the landscape. If you prefer to delve deeper into the sights during the walk, an outing with a guide can become the center of the program.

Among the proposals presented on the site you will find a visit with tasting at Vicara, at Rosignano Monferrato, and a guided excursion among vineyards and colorful installations at Castelletto Molina. They are experiences in different locations: the first can complete a day in the Casalese area, while the second offers an accompanied walk to be chosen as the main activity. Consult the actual program and check the distance from your base before combining them with other visits.

In the Experiences section you will find proposals to evaluate by location, duration and availability. Avoid making an appointment immediately after the theoretical arrival time: leave time to complete the route, rest and reach the meeting point. Thus each part of the day maintains its own space.

Prepare departure and return

Check the weather, daylight hours and source updates. Bring water and suitable clothing, consult the map and download the GPX when present. In rings, check the actual starting point; in linear routes, confirm the return connection in advance.

The season also suggests the pace of the release. In summer the cooler hours may be the most suitable for walking; after the rain some dirt roads require more attention. In low-light months, choose a distance that leaves a comfortable margin before dark. Preparing these aspects frees up your day for everything else.
