Tagliolo Monferrato (Taieu [ta ̧ ̧ ̧ ̧ ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] in Liguria and Piedmont) is an Italian municipality of 1 472 inhabitants[2] from the province of Alessandria, in Piemonte, located in the Upper Monferrato, on a height near the confluence of Stura in the Orba. It is one of the main municipalities of Ovadese, historical and cultural area of Basso Piemonte and the Monferrato, which takes its name from the city of Ovada.
Part of the municipal territory is part of the Natural Park of the Capanne di Marcarolo.
History of Tagliolo Monferrato
SymbolsExplore this chapter
The Municipality draws its own name from Taliolus, Talliolus or Taiolus to indicate perhaps an area of intense deforestation. In the Lombard period there were the monks of San Colombano from the nearby monastery of Belforte Monferrato, known at the time as Uxecium.
Concessed in 976 in fief to the Aleramics by Emperor Otto I, it was owned by various feudal lords: the Marquises of Bosco, Malaspina, Cattaneo della Volta, the Spinolas, the Dorias. During the medieval period it hosted the female monastery of Santa Maria di Bano, whose remains are still visible today on Mount Colma, near the locality of the same name.
It was conquered "armed manu" from the military leader of the Republic of Genoa Egidio di Negro, during the Genoese expansion in the Oltregiogo. Entered the orbit of the duchy of Milan, it was given in fief to the Gentile family.
In 1750 following the marriage of Teresa Gentile with Constantine Pinelli, the manor of Tagliolo passed to the family Pinelli Gentile, still present owner of the castle.
Symbols
The coat of arms and gonfalone of the municipality of Tagliolo Monferrato were granted by decree of the President of the Republic of 1 March 1955.[5]
The gonfalone is a shredded drapery of white and red.[6]

The Castello di Tagliolo Monferrato, still inhabited by the Marchesi Pinelli Gentile, is one of the best preserved inHigh Monferrato. Inserted in the circuit of the "Open Castles" of the Lower Piemonte, it is characterized by a square-shaped tower, which constitutes the oldest part, dating back to the 10th century, used to spot, according to the well-known belief, the possible arrival of Saracen invasions.
Inside are the wineries of the Castle, where for 500 years the wines of the territory have been produced and preserved.
