History of Carentino

SymbolsExplore this chapter

The surrounding area of Carentino was already inhabited in the Neolithic age. During the construction of the railway line Alessandria-Acqui Terme (in the second half of the 19th century) stone weapons were found. The first written documents date back to the second half of the 12th century. At that time the Marquis Alberto d'Incisa, returning from Puglia, gave a legal order to his small Marquisate. Documents dated 27 January 1203 tell of an act of division of Albert's estate among his children. In 1364 the marquises of Incisa Scapaccino They tied, through an alliance pact, to the dukes of Milan. And in the mid-15th century, during the war between Milan and Monferrato, the Monferrato militias invaded the valley of Belbo occupying Carentino who was entrusted to the Incisas with the peace of Lodi (1454). In the 16th century, the plague refected its appearance among the small community as it had already happened in the second half of the fourteenth century. The Gonzaga sold in 1589 the Marquisate of Incisa to Michele Peretti, nephew of Pope Sixtus V. The Peretti, however, oppressed the inhabitants with violence, abuse and harassment. In March 1605 the marquisate passed to Vincenzo Gonzaga who on 13 October 1606 sold the fief of Carentino to Lodovico Fini, dismembering it from the Marquisate of Incisa. Infeuded to Count Guido Francesco Porta di Acqui, on 26 December 1632; he subsequently passed to Nicolao Faà, Marquis of Bruno through a donation on March 30, 1653 in favor of the natural daughter Laura Maria who had married the Marquis Nicolao. The donation was made valid on 31 May 1672 by Duke Ferdinando Gonzaga with the act of investiture. On 3 June 1681, at the death of Nicolaus the Count of Carentino continued to be submissive to the Marquises of Bruno until 1704 by the Gonzaga. In those years the Spanish Succession War was underway, which ended the victory of the Savoy Army on France at the Battle of Turin on 6 September 1706. In 1708 Emperor Joseph I, with a diploma of 30 June, declared the Duke of Mantua to be deceased by the fiefs and granted Carentino to possess the Monferrato, according to agreements concluded with Duke Vittorio Amedeo II, who, on 8 July 1709, confirmed the investiture of the fiefdoms to the Marquis of Bruno Antonino Faà. The Savoy government through reforms gradually led to the abolition of the privileges enjoyed by the feudal class.
