Castelnuovo Belbo is located in the south of Province of Asti and is crossed by the stream Belbo, the only significant watercourse in the municipal territory. It is approximately 35 km from the provincial capital of Asti and approximately 25 km from the provincial capital of Alessandria and is therefore easily reachable from the motorway toll booths of Alessandria Sud, Felizzano-Quattordio and Asti est. It borders the municipalities of Bruno, Incisa Scapaccino, Nizza Monferrato, Bergamasco and therefore also with the province of Alessandria. It is located in seismic zone 4, and was the epicenter of earthquake of 21 August 2000 Piemonte southern, suffering considerable damage to the historic buildings in particular (the parish church and the municipal building underwent considerable restoration work following the event).

History of Castelnuovo Belbo

SymbolsExplore this chapter

The name is mentioned for the first time in 1003 as "Castro Novo qui dicitur supra Relho" and it is composed of the word “castle” and the adjective “new”, of evident meaning. The first documents regarding the village are still before this date, located around 990, when the Marquisate of Incisa it claims its possession and from which it has been part since the 12th century following its destiny.

The Marquisate was built in 1518 in the Duchy of Monferrato and Castelnuovo underwent the plundering by the conductor Gian Giacomo Trivulzio. In 1594 the territory was annexed to the possessions of the Marquis Perreto and in 1619, the Gonzaga acquired its property. In 1708, under the rule of Savoy, the country entered the province of Acqui, and then finally passed into the new province of Asti, established in 1935.

Symbols

The coat of arms and gonfalone of the commune of Castelnuovo Belbo were granted by decree of the President of the Republic of 16 March 1956.[4]

«From silver, to the red mastius, open and windowed of the first.[5]»

The gonfalone is a drape party of red and white.
