From the region to the glass

Canelli DOCG, a wine to discover

The Canelli DOCG gives the Moscato bianco a circumscribed origin between Astigiano and Cuneese. It is a sweet aromatic white wine that invites you to know the place before the glass: hills, villages and vineyards become the starting point for distinguishing this name.

A Canelli the agricultural landscape meets a long culture of wine production. From here you can reach Calosso, Cassinasco and Calamandrana. The DOCG, recognized in 2023, offers a new and precise thread to follow the Moscato inside a territory that already has many stories to tell.

17 municipalities between Asti and Cuneo

The area of the grapes includes a bordered area of seventeen municipalities in the provinces of Asti and Cuneo. Canelli is the nominal reference, but wine is linked to a network of hills that exceeds the city territory. The delimitation requires considering the individual portions allowed, instead of automatically attributing production to each vineyard of the municipalities concerned.

The page Canelli and the hills of Moscato accompanies the exploration of the Astilian sector. Observing the rows from Calosso or climbing to Cassinasco shows the succession of slopes and inhabited. In this landscape, the position of the vineyard gives a visible form at its origin: a bottle can refer to a side that is encountered along the path.

The disciplinary places the vineyards between 165 and 500 meters of altitude and specific conditions of exposure and deposit. This band offers a concrete reference when you look at the slopes: the name Canelli bears with it a selection of places suitable for Moscato. Asking for the quota and position of the vineyard during the visit allows to recognize on the ground part of the rules that build the origin of wine, along with the borders of the area.

A territorial name became DOCG

2023 recognition makes Canelli an autonomous denomination. The story continues a historical relationship between the name of the city and Moscato, giving rules proper to wine and its origin. Knowing this evolution helps to read the current label and distinguish the Canelli from the wider Asti DOCG.

The city allows to add to the history of the name that of the cellars underground. These are places linked to the culture of spumantization and the UNESCO heritage of wine landscapes. Canelli DOCG, however, has its own identity of sweet white: the historical context of the city makes the journey richer, while the type of wine is read in its specific rules.

Moscato bianco in purity

The disciplinary requires 100% of Moscato bianco. This ampelographic base binds wine to the aromatic heritage of only one variety. The sweet component, the scent of grapes and freshness are the references to tasting. The Canelli belongs to this family of aromatic whites, with a distinct path from sparkling wines Asti.

In the cellar you can deepen the collection and the way in which the aromatic part of the must is preserved. The comparison between producers makes evident different interpretations within the same denomination. Dry pastry, fruit preparations and delicate sweets offer possible accompaniments; devoting time to the perfume helps to recognize Moscato without covering it with too intense combination.

From the centre of Canelli to the vineyards

Start with a walk in Canelli, then go back to one of the hills. Calosso and Cassinasco allow to alternate the rest in the village to read the panorama. The visit to a DOCG producer takes the route inside the vineyard and the winery: the place of cultivation becomes part of the tasting, together with the story of the vintage.

For a second day, reach Calamandrana and Ribs of Asti, expanding the exploration of Moscato and other local vines. The Loazzolo DOC and it Strevi DOC offer comparisons with the wines from drying of the same grape. The differences help to recognize Canelli through its combination of origin, varietal purity and style.
