Discovering Silvano d'Orba

Silvano d'Orba (Silvan in Piedmontese, Scirvan in Liguria, Sirvòu locally) is an Italian municipality of 1 828 inhabitants[1] from the province of Alessandria, in Piemonte, located between the beginning of the Po Valley and the first hills of the Alto Monferrato. It is one of the main municipalities of Ovadese, historical and cultural area of Basso Piemonte and the Monferrato, which takes its name from the city of Ovada. Located near the confluence of the Piota stream into the Orba river, the town is surrounded by vineyards that produce excellent D.O.C. wines. such as the Dolcetto of Ovada and Barbera dell'Alto Monferrato, not far away the Gavi.

The ruins still present before the entrance of the current cemetery, testify that the village of Silvano d'Orba was founded in Roman times. It is therefore thought that such ruins, called "Torrazze", are an integral part of the castrum of the mythical town of Rondinaria (also called "the city of gold"), founded precisely to the confluence of the Piota and the Orba, and in which Roman slaves climbed up the banks of the two streams in search of the gold present in their sands. Let's remember that Rondinaria is contemplated in the Peutingerian Table.

History of Silvano d'Orba

Territory inhabited by the Romans, founders of several villages that then constituted the legendary "city" of Rondinaria, a castrum along the Libarna-Acqui road, in the area to the confluence of the stream Piota nell'Orba, mainly devoted to agriculture and gold research. The castrum fortified was located in the area of the current cemetery, while the so-called "city" extended both to the plain of the Orba (verse Ovada) and in the Piota plain (the current Caraffa area), up to below Lerma And Tagliolo Monferrato. Following the barbarian invasions, several inhabitants of the nearby villages of Rondinaria took refuge in the hidden alluvial plain on the right bank of the Piota, where today the hamlet of Pieve di Silvano d'Orba is located. But it was following the Saracen incursions, around the 10th and 11th centuries, that it became necessary to relocate the inhabitants of the valley to the hills. Those who had greater wealth could build fortified residences: this is how the castles and towns of the mountains originated Monferrato, including Silvano himself. In the area of the current town two castles were built, in two different hills, divided by the small valley where the stream called Rio Albareto flows, and two villages arose around them: the first called Silvano, while the other Rocca degli Zucchi (from the name of the Zucca family, who built the castle on the Merli hill). However, in 1446 the second castle was destroyed by the Alexandrians. The two "villages", therefore, both took the name "Silvano", divided into "Villa Superiore" and "Villa Inferiore". The toponym Silvano is attested, starting from 1198, through the forms Silvanus And Selvanus, whose meaning would be 'of the forest' or 'sylvan'. Its origins must be seen in the headquarters of one of those 'sylvanians' who had the task of supervising the territory, preventing the interference of outsiders in the rights reserved for the tenants or concessionaires of the lands. Formerly a fiefdom of the Marquises of Bosco, in the 12th century it came under the dominion of Alessandria, therefore of the Republic of Genoa. Subsequently it was the possession of Marchesi del Monferrato and was fief of Adorno. Once the male line became extinct, the fief passed, through his wife, to the Botta marquises, nobles from Pavia, who, due to this inheritance, added that of the Adorno to their name, thus becoming Botta Adorno. In 1694 the fiefdom took the name of Silvano Adorno. In 1708 with the annexation of Monferrato to the Duchy of Savoy it became part of the territories of this house. At the end of the century Silvano Adorno became Silvano Val d'Orba. During the nineteenth century, Silvano Val d'Orba changed its name to the definitive Silvano d'Orba. In the twentieth century, the town's new cemetery was built in the area of the ancient Roman camp. This was done by reusing the material available on site, saving money and time. Two towers were barely saved. The credit goes to Enrico Belimbau who, elected mayor at the end of 1910, saved what still remains of that historic site.

Sanctuary of San Pancrazio

Located on a hill above the village of Silvano d'Orba in an excellent panoramic position to which you can access both climbing through a path that passes under the majestic ruins of the ancient Zucca castle, and along the road that flanks the castle that was Adorno, the Sanctuary was originally a small oratory built in the 12th century. by the Benedictine monks of the Abbey of Sezzadio, promoters of the cult of San Pancrazio. It can still be seen its primitive door facing the west, formed by large stones with a whole-six arch, now walled. At the beginning of the 17th century, the oratory was expanded and other additions were made in 1795, as indicated by the inscription of the architrave of a door. The last structural changes date back to the second half of the century. XIX with the erection of the bell tower and the extension of the sacristy. In 1980 a group of Silvanese formed in association with the name "Amici di San Pancrazio" and with the contribution of the population began the restoration and maintenance of the church, the surrounding area and the access roads. Every May 12 in Silvano d'Orba is celebrated San Pancrazio, with a procession of the statue of the saint that starts from the village to the hill of the Sanctuary, where the feast takes place with banquets, food and good wine. In 2025, on the occasion of the Jubilee, the Sanctuary of San Pancrazio was recognized by Diocese of Tortona as a jubilee place, at the same time as the Holy Door of St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican.

Adorno Castle

The town of Silvano d'Orba is dominated by the castle Adorno (1492), a medieval military construction, with four massive towers square and crowning of protruding crenellations, still today privately owned (Ing. Giuseppe Morchio).

Not far from the ruins of a tower is all that remains of another castle destroyed in 1446, but already mentioned in documents of 1182 and belonged to the Marquis of Bosco and then to the Alexandrians.

Parish Church of San Pietro

The parish church of St. Peter (at the foot of the castle) originally from the fifteenth century, but it was restored in the 17th century, became a parish church by the Adornos themselves; noteworthy is the main altar and the balustrade of the marble presbytery fine in various colors and the chapel of St. Joseph, with the statue of the saint in stucco.

Church- oratory of San Sebastiano

The church- oratory of San Sebastiano houses a 16th century painting, theApparition of the Virgin and the Trinity to Saints Cosmas and Damian of the Giovanni Andrea Casella (1660)[7].

Torrazzi

Not far from the Orba, on a river terrace rise the Torrazzi, ruins of two towers, probable remains of a larger fortified system extended to the area of the current cemetery, which some identify as the infamous gold city called Rondinaria.

The municipality, in addition to the old town, has many hamlets scattered throughout the vast territory like La Pieve and I Bacchetti known for its artisan production of quality wines and some such as Valle Cochi and Casale Volpreto, located in strategic positions dominated by hills and woods behind them.
