Mombercelli Truffle Fair: guide among white truffles, flavors and hills
Discover the National Truffle Fair of Mombercelli: period, white truffle, gastronomy, wines, what to see and itineraries in the hills of Monferrato.
Terzo weekend in October, generally between Saturday and Sunday. Discover all the appointments on official website of the event.

In mid-October Mombercelli smells of truffles. The streets of the town are filled with stalls, producers, kitchens, glasses and people who come to look for the Tuber magnatum Pico, the white truffle, but almost always end up discovering much more. The National Truffle and Local Products Fair is one of the most important autumn events in Val Tiglione and a perfect opportunity to enter the Monferrato through its flavours, its wines and the landscape of the hills.
Mombercelli is a country that lends itself well to a slow visit. The historic center rises towards the church of San Biagio and the ruins of the ancient castle, while vineyards, hazelnut groves, woods and panoramic roads begin just outside the town. During the fair this small territory concentrates truffle hunters, producers, Pro Loco, tastings, exhibitions, music and cultural initiatives in a few spaces. The best way to experience it is to arrive in time: taste, walk, enter MUSarMO and then leave the center to follow the hills.
When the Mombercelli Truffle Fair takes place
The Mombercelli National Truffle Fair takes place every year in the third weekend of October, generally between Saturday and Sunday. In recent years, Saturday has been used for preview activities, walks, meetings and tastings, while Sunday traditionally hosts the market, the display of truffles and most of the gastronomic events.
Walks, masterclasses, tastings and concerts are opportunities to build a day around your interests.
A fair dedicated to truffles and local excellences
The event usually takes place around Piazza Alfieri, Piazza Unione Europea, Via Bogliolo, Via Marconi and other streets in the centre.
The regional name speaks of National Truffle and Local Products Fair, while tourist channels and the website dedicated to the event often use the name National White Truffle Fair. The two formulations convey the same identity well: the white truffle is the protagonist, but a broader showcase of the gastronomic and wine-growing excellence of the area is built around it.
The white truffle of Mombercelli
The most awaited moment is the arrival of the truffle hunters with the specimens collected in the local woods. The white truffle is not cultivated as a normal agricultural production: it is born in symbiosis with some tree species and its presence depends on the soil, humidity, climate and quality of the environment. Each piece is different in shape, size and aromatic intensity.
During the fair you can observe the specimens on display, listen to those who searched for them and better understand how to recognize a ripe truffle. If you want to buy, take advantage of the presence of expert operators: ask for origin, storage methods and consumption times. It's much more useful than choosing based on size alone.
Tuber magnatum Pico: the king of autumn
The prized white truffle, Tuber magnatum Pico, is the gastronomic symbol of Piedmontese autumn. Its intense aroma allows it to be used in small quantities on simple dishes, in which the heat is not excessive. Tajarin, eggs, fondue, risotto and raw meat are among the most traditional combinations.
The review and award ceremony of the best truffles
The Sunday of the fair traditionally includes an exhibition dedicated to the truffles on display and the awarding of prizes for the specimens judged to be the best. It is one of the moments that allows you to see the work of the trifolao up close and understand how much integrity, aroma and overall quality are appreciated.
Even if you're not an expert, stop by and watch. The value of the fair also lies in making visible a culture that normally remains in the woods, far from the visitor. The truffle arrives in the square after hours of research, knowledge of the area and work with the dog.
Local products and food and wine market
A market dedicated to local products develops around the truffle. Honey, preserves, cheeses, cured meats, hazelnuts, sweets, wine and other specialties allow you to get to know small companies and producers who work in the Monferrato. In the historical editions of the event, products closely linked to Piedmontese cuisine such as cougnà also appear.
Don't rush to buy. Do a complete tour first, talk to those who produce and ask where the company is located. If something strikes you, the contact made at the fair can become a next stop on the journey: a cellar, a laboratory or a farmhouse to visit in the hills.
The Pro Loco and the cuisine of the fair
The gastronomic part is one of the main reasons to spend several hours at Mombercelli. The Pro Loco and local businesses prepare Piedmontese dishes, truffle dishes and local specialities. The Pro Loco menus invite you to choose between local recipes and truffle specialities.
Among the preparations linked to local tradition there is friciula, fried pasta served in a savory version and often accompanied by lard or other local products. In the past the fair has also offered agnolotti, hunchback cardoon flan, fondue, bunèt and other Piedmontese recipes. Rather than looking for a single dish, let yourself be guided by the proposal of the year.
Eat the truffle without covering it
White truffles need simple dishes. If you choose a dedicated menu, favor preparations in which the aroma remains the protagonist. A fondue, an egg or a pasta dish can be more interesting than very elaborate recipes. The truffle is normally sliced raw on the hot plate just before serving.
Wine and Barbera: the other soul of Mombercelli
Mombercelli is surrounded by vineyards and wine is an integral part of the fair. The town is located in an area strongly linked to Barbera and the wine-growing landscapes of the Asti area. The tastings therefore allow you to combine the truffle with a second journey of discovery of the area.
Recent editions have offered moments with AIS Piemonte, tastings in the council room and masterclasses dedicated to wines and bubbles. These events change theme every year, but are particularly useful if you want to go beyond simple tasting and understand production areas, grape varieties and pairings.
The Great Wine Shop
Among the events that appeared in the various editions is the Grande Enoteca, a tasting space dedicated to local wines. If it comes again, take the time to taste a few labels and ask which hill they come from: it's the best way to turn the wine into a map for the next day.
The walk along the Truffle roads
The event also developed an outdoor component. In recent editions, Saturday hosted the panoramic walk Along the streets of the Truffle, a route of approximately six kilometers between partly dirt roads and wine-growing landscapes, designed to bring visitors closer to the area before the full opening of the fair.
It is an idea that represents Mombercelli very well: the truffle is not only told on the plate, but through the landscape in which it is born. If the program of the edition you will visit includes walking, bring shoes with good grip and clothing suitable for the autumn terrain.
The Giant Bottle and the landscape UNESCO
One of the points recalled in the panoramic routes of the area is the Giant Bottle, an installation that dialogues with the wine-growing landscape. Mombercelli is in fact located in an area strongly marked by the culture of the vine and close to the areas recognized in the Piedmont Vineyard Landscape system: Langhe-Roero and Monferrato.
For the visitor the most interesting part is observing how the wine has shaped the hills. The rows follow the slopes, the farmhouses lean on the ridges and the secondary roads connect villages that seem very close but are separated by valleys and ridges.
The historic center of Mombercelli

The historic center rises from the Piazza Alfieri area towards the upper part of the town. The houses follow the slope of the hill and, as you gain altitude, the panorama opens up towards Val Tiglione. During the fair it is worth leaving the most crowded areas for a few minutes and following Via Umberto I.
The country does not require great distances, but the climb naturally invites you to slow down. In a few minutes you can go from the truffle stands to a seventeenth-century church, to the contemporary art museum or to the remains of the ancient castle, creating a much more complete visit.
The Church of San Biagio

The parish church of San Biagio is one of the main monuments of the town. It is a three-nave church with a seventeenth-century layout, built at the beginning of the seventeenth century and subsequently modified and enlarged. The interior was frescoed in the 19th century by the Ivaldi brothers, known as the Mut, and also preserves an altarpiece attributed to Guglielmo Caccia, known as Moncalvo.
If you find it open during your visit, enter calmly. After the noise of the fair, the nave offers a clear change of atmosphere and allows you to add an artistic element to the day that often escapes those who arrive only for lunch.
The ruins of the Castle of Mombercelli
Above the town, the ruins of the ancient castle remain. The Municipality still describes powerful support walls and traces of the structure that dominated the concentric area. The complex should not be imagined as an intact castle that can be visited in the rooms, but as a historical presence that continues to characterize the profile of the town.
From a photographic and landscape point of view, the upper part is very interesting, because it allows you to read the village, bell tower and hills together. It's a short detour that's worth including in your day, especially during the hours when the fair is busiest.
MUSarMO: contemporary art in a hill town
One of the most surprising places in Mombercelli is the MUSarMO, Civic Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. The collection mainly includes works of painting, sculpture, drawing and graphics from the 1930s and 1940s, with Piedmontese and national presences.
The fair can be the ideal opportunity to enter a museum that you would hardly immediately associate with a small town in Monferrato. The calendar of openings and exhibitions should be checked before the visit, because opening hours and initiatives may change during the year.
The Historical Museum of Vine and Wine
The territory of Mombercelli also preserves a collection linked to the history of the vine, wine and peasant culture. The Langhe Monferrato Roero Tourism Board highlights the Historical Museum of Vine and Wine as a collection of rural ethnography in the town.
It is a particularly coherent reference with a day dedicated to truffles and local products: it tells of the tools and practices that have accompanied work in the countryside for generations. For the visit, you can find openings and reservations in the museum contacts.
How to organize Saturday
If the edition maintains the formula developed in recent years, Saturday is the best time to experience the slowest part of the event. Arrive in the afternoon, take part in the walk if scheduled and return to the town for a masterclass, a meeting or the evening opening of the food stands.
Sleeping in the area allows you to avoid returning after dinner and to show up early on Sunday, when the truffles arrive and the town enters the height of the fair. It's also the best solution if you want to taste wine without having to drive immediately afterwards.
How to organize Sunday
Morning: truffles and market
Arrive early. The early hours are the best for observing the truffles on display, talking to the truffles and walking around the market before the crowds increase. If you want to buy, this is also the most suitable time to compare the offers with peace of mind.
Late morning: tastings and historic center
After the first tour of the fair, go up towards San Biagio and the upper part of the town or take part in a guided tasting. Alternating gastronomy and a cultural visit avoids spending the whole day between stands and tables.
Lunch: Piedmontese cuisine and truffles
For lunch, choose between the event stands and local activities. If you want a menu specifically dedicated to truffles, check reservation and availability. The days of the fair can attract many people and the most requested places fill up quickly.
Afternoon: MUSarMO, exhibitions and landscape
Dedicate the afternoon to the MUSarMO exhibitions and discovering art in the village. Before leaving, dedicate a final stretch on foot to the town or move towards one of the panoramic roads between Mombercelli, Vinchio, Agliano Terme and Rocchetta Tanaro.
A weekend between Mombercelli and the Barbera hills

Mombercelli is ideally placed to build a weekend dedicated to Monferrato. Agliano Terme, Vinchio, Nizza Monferrato, Montegrosso d'Asti and Rocchetta Tanaro can be reached without long journeys and allow you to alternate villages, cellars, nature trails and vineyard landscapes.
There is no need to fill the program. A second day can be built with a walk in the morning, lunch in a nearby town and a winery in the afternoon. The real value of this zone is the slow pace, not the number of stages completed.
The Barbera della Rocchetta Road
For those who love to travel by bicycle, an official itinerary of the Tourism Board also crosses the territory of Mombercelli. The Strada della Barbera della Rocchetta passes through the Rocchetta Tanaro Nature Reserve, reaches the hills of Mombercelli in the Ronchi hamlet and continues towards Belveglio.
It is a route that connects nature and vineyards well. Before leaving, download the updated route, check the surface conditions and consider that in autumn rain and leaves can make some sections more slippery.
Val Sarmassa and the truffle forests
A short distance away is the Val Sarmassa Nature Reserve, between Vinchio, Vaglio Serra, Incisa Scapaccino and Cortiglione. The Tourism Board describes it as an area of mushroom and truffle forests, also linked to the memory of the writer and partisan Davide Lajolo.
After seeing the truffle at the fair, walking in a local forest helps to understand the natural context from which it comes. Naturally, the hunt is not an improvised activity: the truffle is harvested in compliance with the regulations and with the necessary skills. The visitor must limit himself to experiencing the forest as an environment and landscape.
The fair with children
The event can also be enjoyable for families, but on central Sunday it can be very crowded. With small children it is best to arrive early, alternate the market with short walks and identify quieter areas to stop in advance.
Music, entertainment and collateral initiatives vary every year and can make the day more suitable even for the little ones. Check the specific program of the edition to understand which activities are actually planned.
Photographing Mombercelli during the fair
The Truffle Fair offers many subjects: baskets of truffles, hands of hunters, newly completed dishes, glasses, markets and faces. To avoid identical photographs, alternate these details with larger images of the town and hills.
The upper part of Mombercelli allows you to frame the village with the bell tower of San Biagio and the ruins of the castle. Outside the village, the vineyards and ridge roads add the necessary context to tell where the wine and products you encountered at the fair come from.
Practical information
Where it takes place
The event affects the center of Mombercelli, in particular Piazza Alfieri, Piazza Unione Europea and the surrounding streets. The layout of the stands and the areas involved may vary: consult the map or the directions published by the organizers for the current edition.
How to get there
Mombercelli is located south of Asti, in Val Tiglione. The most convenient way to explore the surrounding area is by car. The indications of the event accompany the arrival in the town between accesses, parking lots and connections.
Where to park
The town has parking areas and in the most crowded editions the organization can arrange temporary solutions outside the centre. Arriving early in the morning reduces seat search times and allows you to enter the fair before the peak of visitors.
What to wear
The historic center has sloping sections and outdoor initiatives can use dirt roads. Comfortable shoes with good grip are therefore preferable. October can alternate between sun, fog and rain in the same weekend: dress in layers and bring a waterproof garment.

From the scent of truffles to the streets of Monferrato
Mombercelli is one of those places where a food fair can easily become a trip. You come for the white truffle and, within a few hours, you find yourself talking about Barbera, walking through the vineyards, entering a contemporary art museum or looking at the town from the remains of a castle.
The advice is simple: don't experience the fair as a closed destination. Taste, buy, ask the producers where they come from and then follow those directions up the hills. The Monferrato really begins when what you found on the bench becomes a place to reach, a road to travel and a landscape to remember.
