Ninety-six: at a glance
The Ninety-six (Novèis in Piedmontese, Noveise in Liguria) is the geographical area that gravitates around the city of Novi Ligure. Although it does not correspond to any administrative structure, the historical-cultural, economic and logistical link of the municipalities that are part of it make the Novese area a homogeneous area with well-defined borders, which occupies the south-eastern portion of the Province of Alessandria, on the border with Liguria.
The area of Novese, which before the law Rattazzi constituted the Province of Novi, is part of theOverplay, territory with high influence Genovese which also includes the Ovadese and the hinterland of the metropolitan city of Genoa.

Orography

The Novese is a territory that extends for almost 750 km2, heterogeneous from the orographic point of view, being essentially constituted by the Po Valleys of some valleys of the Ligurian Apennines. In particular it is formed by a portion of the middle Scrivia valley, from a small part of the Orba valley and the totality of the Lemme valley, Borbera valley and Spinti valley. If the middle course of the river Scrivia does not present great reliefs, but undulating hills and almost flat stretches, the Lemme valley and above all the Val Borbera have reliefs of all respect, arriving at 1 700 meters of altitude of the mountains Chiappo and Ebro. Other relief of the territory worthy of note is the Mount Tobbio, a destination for hikers coming from both the Piedmontese and Ligurian sides.

Novi Ligure and the area of Novese, by virtue of their geographical location, were during the Middle Ages subject to dispute by several states of that period, such as the Duchy of Milan, the Marchesato del Monferrato and the Republic of Genoa. It was precisely the Republic of Genoa, over the centuries, to increase its influence on the territory of Ninese, governing directly for a long time Novi Ligure And Gavi (which simultaneously became holiday resorts and strategic northern outposts of the Oltregiogo) and indirectly many of the other towns that became Imperial Feudi of the noble Genoese families. The Republic of Genoa fell (1797), the Novese became part of the Ligurian Republic and then in the Department of Genoa of the French Empire of Napoleon Bonaparte. Following the Restoration enshrined in the Congress of Vienna (1815), the Novese was placed within the borders of the reconstituted Duchy of Savoy (reborn as an independent sovereign state). On 10 March 1818, the Province of Novi (reflecting the ancient administrative borders of the Novi area) which then survived as a province first until 1847, the year of the Perfect Merger, then within the Kingdom of Sardinia, then until 23 October 1859, when the Rattazzi Decree abolished it, making the territory enter the limits of the Province of Alessandria and therefore in Piemonte, always within the Kingdom of Sardinia.
